Gearbox additives

I know there has been plenty written about oil additives, from wonder stuff to snake oil, but my car like lots of others has a noisy gearbox/diff. next week Its booked in for an oil change, filters and gearbox oil change. has anyone other than POR1983 see post in Tec Articles http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=696960 used Slick 50 or any other additive to stop or improve transmission whine? and if so would they recommend it or not.

Personally I wouldnt bother, just buy a good quality gear oil that already has its 'additive package' designed by the manufacturer. Often oil additives do more harm than good...

I had a noisy gearbox in my 89 turbo and tried swepco it made it quieter but when box got warm the noise came back,I ended up getting a rebuild.Lots of people swear by it but I think it depends on how noisy your box is.

Mine sounded like a supercharger, it was a shame to loose that sound really!, but as above after adding the slick50 PTFE additive it became silent after a few miles and has remained that way, for £15-£20 and 10 minutes work it has to be worth a try.

The problem with this sort of thing is that there aren't many people who've tried it out more than once or twice, and any meaningful test in engineering terms would have to involve several units over an extended period of use, with proper strip-down examination of the wear patterns. Obviously that's not what we do. For what it's worth, my individual experience (which is statistically meaningless) is that I used a Slick-50 gearbox additive just once, on a Manta, around 1995, and three months later the gearbox gave up. I am very wary of lubrication additives in general, preferring instead to use the best quality oil available and change it more often than standard practice would suggest.

The diff oil is the same as the gearbox so additives may very well affect the lock up operation of the LSD

If it has one, yes. While that is standard on the 250 hp cars, I thought that for the '87, a 220 bhp car, the LSD was not standard and very few have them. Happy to be corrected...

Thanks for the input guys. Mine does not have a LSD. Having read the posts and taking everything into consideration, some say additives work, others say Swepco, So only one way to find out..........Fiiiiiight

Seriously though I have not been a great fan of additives so it looks like the Swepco option. I'll post the results when the job is done. Thanks again.

Used Swepco for many years when my S2 was a road car, seems it did a brilliant job of protecting the bearings and synchros. Not a particularly slick gear shift though, depends what you want. I moved on to the Millers nanotech stuff which gives an amazingly slick gear shift.

I have Royal Purple oil in mine, gearbox is nice and smouth gearbox.

When cold in the morning the shift is very very stiff and slow but when warm it has a great slick gear shift, belive from people who have used Swepco find the same.

I researched this a long time ago when I had my 944T but realised that I was lucky as the 5th gear/final drive whine on mine was barely noticeable so I didnt bother but the yanks highly recommend Royal Purple in the gearbox.

I used it in my engine too - Promax supplied me with it.

Well the Swepco is in and the whine on the run home has gone [:D] Now lets see how long it stays quite.[8|] Thanks for the input guys.
