Gear Selection Problem

Moving the gesr lever across the gate is difficult and it usually sticks. The principal issue is 2nd - 3rd and 4th - 5th with 5th - 3rd/4th being less noticeable, but this may be due to it being less common.

The car has had a new gear lever fitted and I believe that it may have become a little worse over the Winter, during which it was barely driven.

Any thoughts?

Worn rear linkage? The new gear lever is supposed to be set at a particular angle, if its not that might be compounding the problem.

From memory I think its 85 deg

+1 for Scott - IMHO if you are binding on L-R travel it is likely the rear linkage worn/out of adjustment/or in need of a clean and lube. As there is no "gate" on the shifter - either the rear is out of whack or if the shifter angle is seriously wrong - it may be rubbing on the console/shifter gaiter although I would think that engaging 2/4th would feel a little strange if the shift lever was rubbing....

Correct, it's shown on Clarkes page. I did mine last weekend as fitted a new front gear level kit from JMG and whilst my old one didn't look worn it did make a surprising difference as reverse was often a pain to get in to.

I just made a card template for the 85 degrees (so gear lever points 5 degrees to the rear of the car to be clear.)

I used the term gate figuratively [:D] I couldnt think how else to describe lateral movement. Lateral movement might have done though!

I suspect that it is the rear linkage, but I wondered whether anyone would suggest the transmission oil. I omitted to mention the occasional fore and aft stubborness too, although that has become barely noticeable after a few days of use.

What oil do you have in the box?

I have Royal Purple (75W90 I think) in mine and when warm its spot on but on a cold morning its very stubborn to select gears, but the same stubborness side to side as forward and backwards.

I had the rear linkage replaced a couple of years ago, not because it was sticking but the opposite. So not sure how a worn linkage would make it stick unless it was getting stuck on something in some place [&:]

Also the linkage was a daft price like £90 to £100.
