Fun day out for sick children

I found an interesting leaflet on my boxster this morning, asking me to participate in a fun day out for children with cancer. I contacted the organisers (CCLASP - Children with Cancer and Leukaemia Advice and Support for Parents) to tell them about this site and they've asked me to post some information.

The event is arranged for Sunday May 8th 2005 in East Lothian. The aim is to get 75 porsches to take 75 sick children on a sports car parade for an hour or so. There will be food and music afterwards and a playground for the children and, to appeal to the vanity of we Porsche owners [:D], the children will also vote for the best looking car of the day. The event will end at about 5pm.

It's a worthy cause. Apparently I'm one of the first to sign up, so many more Porsches are needed. All you need is a positive attitude and a Porsche that won't break down on the day [:D].

I was approached by Ferdie on this day out some months ago and in principle I agreed to help ,but most of you know I no longer run the region and have passed this on to Alan ,I know he has sent a email to Ferdie in the last few days and no doubt he will email you all with the details .Alan at present does not use the forum It was the intention for Ferdie to come along to the two meetings in Glasgow and Edinburgh in February to give us more details on this worthy event.We as Porsche owners are lucky and priviliged to be driving such nice cars ,so lets give the under priviliged a great day out and try and join in ...I read an article on another forum Scooby net where in Holland a terminaly ill child's parents asked if some one could give there son a ride in his favourite car.and the responce was overwelming that the local police where aslo involved in helping to control the amount of cars that drove past the boy's house sounding there horns I beleive it was in the hundreds that turned out acording to the photos that where posted.So how about it can you spare time for this cause?

I think the organiser of this event plans to pop along to our meetings in Glasgow and Edinburgh in Feb to outline what is involved ,so if you can make it please come along to the meetings ,rember this is the first meet at the Hawes.

Ferdie, the organiser of this event, has asked me to post on his behalf again. He will be attending the Glasgow and Edinburgh meetings, to answer questions and hopefully drum up more support for this event. At the moment he still only has 5 people who have confirmed they will participate. Obviously this is a bit worrying as it seems 75 cars are required to make it a successful day out for everyone. Please pass the word on about it, at the very least.

Ferdie came along to our meeting in Glasgow on Tuesday to outline his plan.he needs you all to commit to this great venture which is on Sunday 8th May but he needs your help NOW.There is no cost to you other than your time and petrol.as you all no you will have a child with you in the car and it requires a Disclosure Scotland form to be filled out a mere formality I am sure .So in the fist instance email him to give your support so he can confirm numbers,his details are fun_day_out@yahoo.co.uk or on 07919 850 633.
PLEASE HELP He is comming along to the Edinburgh meeting on Thursday at the Hawes to give details to the East coast members

Just spotted this thread ~ it certainly sounds like a worthwhile cause.

Having never been to a meeting though ~ how likely do you think it is that 75 cars will be willing / able to commit?

Worth approaching both Glasgow and Edinburgh OPCs?

I'm sure I could get a TVR or two along ~ or is it specifically Porsche only?

 
I mentioned to Ferdie that the OPCs might be convinced to supply a few demo cars, driven by interested staff. Advertising the event at the OPC might also reach a few more people. 75 Porsches is a tall order but it should be do-able, there are a lot of Porsches about as far as I can see.

I don't think it'll be necessary to disappoint the kids with lesser cars like TVRs [:D], anyway the organiser did specify that the participants should have a car not likely to break down on the day, so that counts them out anyway. [;)] I've also suggested that if it's not looking likely that 75 people will commit, then they perhaps should rethink and go to a track for a few hours, and use the available cars to give every kid a few laps in at least one car (Obviously not at normal track-day speeds). That track just up in Fife (name escapes me) would be suitable and maybe they could be convinced to give the venue over for a few hours for minimal costs.

He has approached Edinburgh not very interested it seem's don.t know about Glasgow .
It has to be all Porsche .I agree it is a bit ambitious 75 cars but we live in hope .

Really, Edinburgh OPC isn't interested? that's pretty poor IMO. Apart from it being a good cause, it's a lot of free goodwill for them, and all they need to do is have a couple of members of staff volunteer a few hours of their time and provide a couple of demo or 2nd hand machines for a few hours. No big deal for them, I would've thought.

I will sign up if I can. The problem is that I am in the process of changing cars and the new
one might not be road legal by May 8th (it is not now). I will enroll as soon as I can. It certainly
is a cause worth supporting.

An email from the organiser last night says that they now have 50 people who've signed up. That's pretty good going, only 25 more cars required., it's looking hopeful.

The response has been good ,but let's not become complacent as there is bound to be some that call off and when we all fill in the disclosure form that will be even less [:D][:D],but serious we must all try and commit to this .The guys from TIPEC have also commited to this .PLEASE rember to attend the next meeting in both Glasgow and Edinburgh and bring along your completed forms along with your birth certicate I know some of you haven't got one [:D][:D] and a utility bill showing your address. We need to act now on this ,so if you have not yet signed up please do it NOW

I have contacted Mark in Aberdeen .The main problem is in getting the disclosure forms collected fron the NE as they meet in Cumbria area so logistic is a problem .Still think with the help of OPC this is obtainable .
