Fuel smell

On the way home this afternoon I took a tight right hand bend fast - as you do [:D] - and straight afterwards there was a very strong smell of petrol in the car like I had a leak.

I can't see fuel leaking from anywhere in the engine bay, under the car or on top of the fuel tank having looked through the inspection hole. Anyone had this before or got any clue why this happened?

Cheers
Andy

ORIGINAL: pauljmcnulty Not as simple as over-filling it, and some sloshing out on a bend?
Good point - I had filled up about 30 miles previous, not brim full, just until the pump clicked. I did look and there wasn't any fuel leaking down the side of the wing so guess that this wasn't it. I'll have to take the same bend with the same gusto at a later date with a low tank and see if the same happens! [:D]

I get that on mine with a full tank on track. I fixed it by never going on track with more than 3/4 tank [:D]

Panorama magazine (PCNA club magazine) has had a couple of tech topics on this with the 944s and their recommendation is to check the vent hoses and vapor canister that reside in the c pillar beside the fuel filler. The hoses get old and crack and the canister is prone to cracking where the hose pipe connections join the body of the canister. As these are on the vent side of the system they don't really leak but if fuel gets sloshed around or if you are a little sloppy re-fueling - you can get a fuel smell. I've had this once or twice when I filled my S2 really full but it doesn't happen frequently. I haven't been in there for a look but sounds reasonable....

That's a more useful suggestion than mine. I had this on a 924. tightened up the clips on the vent hose and it all went away.

Not underneath - In the hatch under the carpet by the osr wheel arch there is a removable plate covering the filler / vent tubes. It's stuck down so doesn't come off straight away. Try there first.
