Fuel Pump

Buy new! A twenty year old fuel pump isnt a safe bet when you consider that a couple of seconds running lean whilst on boost will destroy the engine.

Get a turbo pump - although i've not seen the specs I can't see the S one having the capacity, new or otherwise.

Yup good advice. I bought a sytec one from Matty something or other on e-bay. About £90 inc all fittings and equivalent of the Bosch 044 motorsport one. Stuart

Thanks for the advice, the one you mention is from matt lewis racing I have just seen it on ebay

ORIGINAL: gajh I am in the process of fitting a turbo engine in my S and wonder if I would have to replace the fuel pump with the one from the turbo or would the one in the S be ok. Thanks
If you are fitting the 220 the S gearbox might just hold together if you don't boot it hard, but remember the turbo has hardened crown wheel and pinion so dont be surprised if in a few months you are asking for advice on changing the gear box. In addition I think the ratios will not suit the turbo engine. The S is geared to do about 144 at probably something like 6400 so your turbo engine will just get you there quicker then sit on the rev limiter. I had an S so I know the rev limit is 6800. Of course you could go up an inch on the wheels to raise the final drive ratio, but I would have thought that unless your S is particularly good (in which case why ruin it) the expense isn't worth the trouble. Driving an S is akin to driving a 190 hp turbo if there was such a thing. Foot down nothing much nothing much nothing much 3700 an off you whizz. From the look of the pic you do have big wheels but the rest of my comments are relevant, and how will you stop it. The front brakes are the same as the 924 Turbo (and early 928) even the S2 with a MERE 211 BHP and a shed load more torque has four pot calipers. I sincerely hope that my comments have been premature and that you have considered these aspects and have them covered, otherwise I am inclined to think that driving it will not be the sinecure you hope it will.

Isnt it only the 250 transaxle (whose code I forget) which had the toughened up internals: 1st, 2nd & 3rd and thicker output chafts?

Hi, Love the comments and thats why this is a great forum, I have all the turbo running gear, the torque tube, LSD gearbox and the engine, i also have the m030 brake callipers front and rear, I have an uprated turbo and LR maf conversion but wont fit this just yet. I have got a turbo and ecu and klr from nick that he has chipped so should be a good starting point. I am also running gaz gold pro coil overs oh and I also have the turbo front ARB. Before fitting I will be fitting a new clutch, timing belt, balance belt and all the runners. Yes I am running 18" Sport classic II alloys, must admit it is a comfortable ride compared to my bmw 235ci.

No, all Turbos have that. What the 250 gets in addition is the standard limited slip diff.

Great to see you have done your homework, should be nice fit

IIRC only 250 turbo's have hardened 1st and 2nd gear and also lsd. 3rd gear not hardened. Is indeed AOR and has external oil cooler loop so easy to spot. Stuart

Yep, the hardened 1st and 2nd came in on the Turbo S of 1988. So presumably carried over to the 250 Turbos from 89.

I see that I have included the phantom hardened third gear again, despite knowing that it was only 1st & 2nd... The 016R-5P transaxle originally had a coiled oil cooler and a 40% locking LSD was an option. The oil cooler was made a cost option for 1987 and 1988.

We will forgive you Simon!! You are usually anorakically spot on (if that's even a word!!) [;)] Stuart

I know that Totty is thinking about getting an uprated fuel pump fitted as part of his mods. Is fitting this going to cause over-fueling or will the car just take what it needs?

Since fuel pressure is normally regulated by the fuel pressure regulator, the possible excess of fuel returns back to the tank through the fuel return line.
