Fuel pump whirr but no go?

I take it this is the external pump you are referring to?
Have you pulled the pipe at the fuel filter to see if it’s getting that far?
In theory, the motor in the pump would still spin even if the pump was blocked.

In my experience-if the motor runs, then it should pump fuel.
If there's no fuel in,then there's no fuel out but wise not to run empty.
The one way check valve on pump output may not be working -this can be changed-if the fuel accumulator(s) on the output are US -then there may not be an output or not enough to reach the fuel filter.

As Archie says ,easy to check at filter. You need a length of rubber hose which fits tight on the filter outlet-a 5 litre plastic bottle ( cleaned out oil container) -remove King lead from distributor & crank engine -best with an assistant really-alternatively use a relay bridge wire incorporating a switch on a lead long enough to let U stand with the bottle alongside the engine
