Fuel economy gauge - econometer

The fuel economy gauge in my 1983 944 does not work. Never has in my ownership, and I am keen to get it working. Not that I desperately want to know how many mpgs i am getting but it just annoys me that it doesn't work. It is the one in the top section of the rev counter.
Is there a known fix or at least a series of things to check?
any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

It isa separate little board just to it, i'd just try and get another one from Sulzeruk or another breaker.

Thanks. I thought the electronic version was for later cars and that the earlier cars like mine worked on a vacuum. I would like to try and get the existing one working before I try a swap as if it is anything other than the unit itself then i will still have the same problem with a replacement unit. Any idea what connections to try other than those at the back of the gauge itself?
thanks again

My square dash ('83) car had a small circuit board screwed to the back of the speedo with red and green wires going to the econometer, I have my old spare here.

The gauge uses a combination of road speed and injection pulse time to calculate fuel consumption in miles-per-gallon.

The DME supplies the injector ti signal and road speed is taken from a small wheel on the back of the speedometer and convered into an electrical signal by a hall-effect sensor.

It could also be worth checking that you don't have a speedo from a car without an economy gauge (these do not have road speed wheels fitted).

Haven't had a chance to look at the ack yet but when I started the car earlier the gauge momentarily flickered into life for the first time ever! So I guess that supports the theory of a loose connection. I will investigate further tomorrow..
Thanks for the help so far.

Have had a rummage around the back of the speedo. There is indeed the small circuit board on the back. Gave it a fiddle but no reaction on the gauge. I assume the wires go back to the DME but haven't checked. Any idea where the other end of the connection to the DME is? i.e. is there a sensor somewhere on the engine? Also, where should the needle sit when the ignition is switched off? presumably at the minimum?
thanks for the help
