Fuel Cap Tether

Here's a nice easy question.....I currently have the standard fuel cap on my 1999 C2.
It has a groove in the side of it so you can hang it on the edge of the fuel filler flap (not that I'd ever do that!).
I've seen the Tequipment cap (and others) advertised that state they include a "thether strap".
On the 997 one end of this seems to secure to the hinge somehow and then you hang the strap over a hook on the inside of the flap.....but there's nothing like this on the 996.

So where are you supposed to fix the end of the tethering strap? The only thing I can think of is you have to undo the hex head bolt to the left of the inlet and use this to secure it?

Anyone fitted one of these and can tell me the right way to secure it?

i leave my filler cap on the flap when i fill up. is there a reason not to do this.

Only that I....
A. Worry about it falling off
B. Worry about it damaging the paint on the edge of the flap

;)

the tether was broken on my car and I had to buy a complete new cap. Its fixed to a screw below the hinge and hangs from the back of the filler flap when refuelling the car:

no problem,

For info my car is a 996.2 40th Anniversary model, I guess the 996.1 cars didn't have this feature?

My '02 Audi S3 has the groove in the filler cap as described in the first post and i use this to hang the cap on the flap door when filling that car up, can't say i have noticed it damaging the paint.

Mines a 'narrow' 996(1st gen) i think i remember richard saying it was a mod later added, as for it dripping on anything, im fairly sure the flap is plastic anyway so it wouldnt be that much to replace/repair.
