Fuch Off !

It seems to me the late-offset Fuchs replica's or copies don't look right.

There is the casting process stigma, plus they lack the depth of dish which makes the wheels look wide from the side view.

Hence, a really nice old 951 on 16" Fuchs is 10 times more desirable than a 997 Carrera Classic with huge cheap cast copies at an outrageous cost. For Porsche, the cast process margins suit nicely, and the marketing people think its OK.

Actually, genuine Fuchs in almost any colour look good.

Perhaps the ultimate car wheel style? alongside Minilites on a square arch RS1800, or the Bugatti type 35 wheel, Magnesium 964 Cup 1's, Pirelli P-Slot 15" and not forgetting the 16" forged CS wheel introduced on the Silver Rose. (all in Silver[;)])

I have a set of those (CS) for the Turbo S also George, truth be known i am a bit of a wheel slag [:D]
 
Steve, white is really growing on me, if and when they get refurb i was thinking possibly plain old silver centres with polished rim (anodised) Steve what have you had done to yours refurb wise as a my wheels have a good few marks, pitting and scuffs on them ?

I got an early offset car to go with my early 951 fuch's some day when I get round to it too.

I prefer to think of it as - everyone has their own way of going mad -

Steve, white is really growing on me, if and when they get refurb i was thinking possibly plain old silver centres with polished rim (anodised) Steve what have you had done to yours refurb wise as a my wheels have a good few marks, pitting and scuffs on them ?

About £120 per wheel for stripping, satin black powder coat, diamond cut lips and finally a satin clear coat by Platinum Wheels (formally Lepsons) in Swindon. They do all the wheels for Dick Lovett Porsche, Ferrari, BMW etc. plus others.

IMO this is the ruination of good wheels. They were machined at the factory and further cuts will remove strength (they will say its only a few thou, but it will be 20), and it looks like something Wolfrace would make. Also, if the YTS lad has them out of concentric or true or both, they will be badly balanced.

Why is it called Diamond? they will use a tungsten tip which is suitable for aluminium (rake & clearance). Do they anodise?

Unless they are bad I would not let any experts near them.

The new 17" 18" 19" Fuchs wheels are forged as per the originals, the cheaper copies are cast.

Paul, thats something I was unaware of, thanks for the info.

What I would say is the originals had a style which was an outcome of : Wheel centre diameter, Wheel Rim depth and profile, tyre profile, workmanship, forging finish detail, weight, which is lost in the new ones. Fuchs need depth, and the modern offset will not allow this. In summary they look different. I wonder are they lightweight? German or Far East?

I have been advised by Fuch specialist restorers NOT to have them machined but re anodised but that said they reckon you can get away with 3 skims dependent on depth, i think i am leaning towards the frosted original look now rather than the machined high polish finish ?
Whatever i do not have the spare wonga at the moment to do anything with them. [:(]

I have 17" cup 1, 17" cup 2, 17" 996 wheels with trackday tyres, and 16" turboS style as well!

I have Cayman wheels on mine (and a set of Boxster II wheels in the garage) [:D]

oh and a set of 18" sport design wheels that came off my Boxster S...
 
I sold a set of 8" and 9" wheels with crested centres and new Dunlops to PH for £250 is the distant past. They were like new too. I think I kept the centres.

Seeing what theyre worth now it makes me shudder. All I have left are some 7.5" & 9" 993 Winter Cups, some 16" Boxster wheels, a set of 1986 Telephone Dials, one set of Cookie Cutters, the dials on my 2.7 and a set of three piece compomotive competition wheels in 17" Cup sizes - I think.
 
Veerzigzag, they are 951 part numbers, that is 944 Turbo 220 wheels on a 944 220 Turbo.....................bloody 911 wheels, the guy i bought them off had them on a early 911, cheeky bugger !

In the days when i drove 911s, back in the '90's, the cheaper versions had cookie cutters and the general idea was to upgrade to Fuchs. It's good that just about any wheel style will fit any Porsche, and once one acquires an extra set, two sets is never enough. Must get a rack in the garage, a fast jack, and an electric gun to whizz the nuts off for fast wheel changes. Oh, and some 17's...
 
I've found over the years that no matter what wheels I try on my cars I always come back to the decision that the original wheel, in the original size looks best and drives best.

Hence my S2 is now back on mint D90's and the genuine 17" Cup 1's are stashed in the corner of the garage.......but nice to have [:D]

Totally agree Rudds, with an exception rim size always best as standard not the stylee though , i have gone to 16 from 16, my BMW E30 318Is was a lovely thing on factory 14 " but looked much better on 15 " though it was not anywhere near as sharp.
Looks as though you are not joining us on the Porsche collection buy with Martin ?
