Engine conversion I am very interested in.
Me too, A few have put the LS1/2 V8 in the 944 in the states, and this compnay specialise in doing cars here, but dont think they have done a 944. I see this as a good future project for someone like Promax Motorsport, they already are one of the biggest servicing specialists for the Vauxhall VXR8/Monero, so it would seem like a natural thing for them to do. I hear they have looked into it, but I dont think they've actually done it, yet.
Would be interesting to know what their plans are re this, as i'm sure there would be a few takers for such a conversion over the coming years, it is tempting if not exactly eco friendly or economical...

You're spot on. But a few months behind the times.
Promax (/Monkfish) are indeed looking at the conversion, and will sell you one. Priced at £20k (I think, although my memory could be wrong) for a fully-converted, turn-key converted car. However I have not seen one in the tin, and am not 100% sure whether Promax have actually made one yet.
Their line is that £20k is a very reasonable price for a car with the performance and handling of a LS1-powered 944.

anyone done a 928 V8 into a 944?
That's one of the things about the GM V8's - they are quite narrow engines and fit well into the engine bay of a 944. (And of other cars - see the Renegade Hybrids site. They fit them into 911's, 930's, Subarus ... all sorts.) They also are quite light and produce a lot of oomph. If you can overlook the fact that they are yank iron, they are very fine engines.
928 V8's are much wider engines, with the cylinders at a larger angle. Fitting one into the front of a 944 isn't impossible, but you need to remove so much metal that the end result is arguably no longer a 944. (Pretty much everything including the wheel arches needs to come out, and be replaced by a spaceframe. It has been done, and there are photos around, but it's not a sight - let alone a job - for the faint-hearted.)

Thats correct, we want to do a complete car and finish and prove it, then sell it, rather than use a customers car to try the fisrt one. That way if there turns out to be any hitches, we can deal with them. Only when its proven would we sell the complete article.
We mocked it up and it all looks good!
