FOR SALE: 1987 944 MOT Feb 2010

Unfortunately I need to sell my 1987 944 Lux, It is a great car but I now need the cash so it has to go.

The car is a 2.5 litre model in Metallic Maraschino Red, it has a full service history including a stamped service book from Porsche specialists and a lot of receipts for work done, the mileage is 156,000.

The engine starts and runs perfectly, it holds good oil pressure and water temperature, it had the cam belt changed about 25,000 miles ago, however it is due a standard service (oil change etc).

The car drives very well ad pulls strongly, the only major issue is a sloppy gear shift, however this is a common problem on the 944 and is easy and cheap to fix with new shift bushes.

The interior is cream velour and is in ok shape but a little tatty, there is a tear on the driver's side seat bolster. All of the original equipment works with the exception of the passenger's side electric window and the driver's electric seat (manual adjustment of this is possible), both of these problems are likely to be easy fixes as they most likely require only replacement switches. The car is also fitted with a face off cd player and a Clifford 3 point immobiliser.

The car has MOT until February 2010 and sailed through the last one with no advisories.

Im looking for £1300, the car is located in Bath, Somerset

Unfortunately the car is a bit dirty in the pics as I haven't gotten round to cleaning it yet, hopefully will this weekend, but I can assure you the paint and body are in good shape.

Thanks for looking

Its isnt, but very very few 944s are in anything like concours condition now. A good deal depends on the original trim options and grey-beige leatherette and velour was never going to last. An all black dash and plain vinyl door cards with black logo material would have looked much better (and been cheaper to buy) and itd probably still look smart now.

To put it into perspective: I had a 1987 which still looked like new inside (30,000 miles Alpine white and red with red velour pinstripe and leatherette), in 1993 and that was rare even then...

Interestingly enough mine is Alpine white with the Burgandy interior and mine still looks good even now

Oooops apologies to the OP for thread derailment [&o]

Rightly or wrongly, I always think that seats are a good indicator of the type of use a car has had. I notice the passenger seat also has a split in the seat cushion. Looks like a slightly tired run of the mill example to me.

The fine pinstripe was far more hardy than the velour.

Im guessing that its an 87? If it was an 88 model year car then itd have had a cassette holder as standard..... Mine had a poverty spec tray too, which was far better than the cassette holder. That said; Ive got a perfect series one-type cassette holder that Im about to fit into my 924S, because it looks wrong somehow without it...

If you actually made some effort then you might be able to sell it. The fact that you didn't even wash the car just shows the lack of care towards the car (in my opinion) so sadly I don't think you have much hope unless you make a bit more effort. Pls dont take this the wrong way but have a look at the ads for all the cars that have sold on pistonheads for example, all the ads with lots of pics, lots and lots of information etc show the car has been cared for.

And to place an ad for a car that you haven't even washed is never going to help you shift it. E-bay is your best mate. And start with a low reserve !

Harsh but fair methinks. I spent all day yesterday sorting out a friend's 1998 540i for sale that has been until his new car arrived it, doing 30k miles per year and it's amazing what you can achieve in 7 hours with some of the modern products, a hosepipe and a vacuum cleaner. Now it looks like it's done 40k miles, not 140k, so I think a good solid days work from the OP will have that paintwork gleaming.

Just to throw some water over it and remove the mud from the car would be a start ! I doubt it's not been clayed, polished or waxed either !

Oh well !!

Agreed. If you want to get anything like a decent price for a car in this market you need to put a bit of effort into the ad and prepping the car.

Think about all the things you'd see as positive or negative when you go to see a used car, and then use this to make yours stand out from the crowd. With a 944, there's so much talk of where they rot, the important things to have in it's recent service history etc. For instance, I read the ad and immediately thought how many years since the belts were done? Is all that dirt hiding rusty sills?

I'm sure it's a great car, it just needs to have a day spent tarting it up and wording the ad better. I reckon it would fetch a higher price that way, which must be what you're after! [:)]
