Fog Light Backing Plate

Was replacing the lens on the n/s fog light today with a nice new one - there had been a previous repair and it was bonded in. []

Turns out the backing plate is broken so I have a new lens but need a new (or replacement) backing plate to reinstall properly.

Can you buy the backing plate separately? If so, anyone know the part number for n/s? Thanks.

Unfortunately not [:(] Porsche sell either the lens or the whole unit, but not the backing plate as a seperate item. There was a company in the States that made backing plates a few years ago but I can't find any trace of them now. I think your best bet will be trying to find a second hand one now

Is the back of the lamp unit fixed from the outside or the rear/inside of the spoiler? I need to get mine off (new bulbs) but the fixing screws for the lens are so badly corroded I can't get purchase with any tool...will have to drill the heads off, but I'd rather do it up on the bench!!

Been looking at replacements but I recall the whole unit is c£230 in the UK, but "only" $185 from the USA (Pelican parts I think). How can something made and boxed by Bosch and sent to the US be cheaper than it is here?!

The backing plate is bolted in with 3 8mm nuts and is fixed inside the spoiler ... You have to hoist the car up and take off the batwing and brake vents to gain access !
Better on a lift.

Be careful getting stuff from the US.. !
(1) I got $550 worth of stuff from Pelican and was charged €112 on import duty[]
(2) US spec foglights have the drive lamps blanked and no sidelight - Just make sure you have the correct Euro spec

I dont know what the charge will be for import duty in the UK ... But here in the "Ripoff Republic" its scandalous [:(] This must be the most 944 unfriendly country in the world.... Rant Over and relax

Steve,

How 'broken' is the backing plate? Do you have photos?

From memory it is nothing terribly special and may well be pretty easy to repair. Either with a plastic welding tool or a tube of araldite.

Thanks for the warning Donal...what attracted me to Pelican's list was that it appeared to include Europe spec lights. You're right about the charges though. I bought a Momo steering wheel from them but got hit with duty (as expected), then VAT on the total, then the carrier took a rake off for collecting the taxes for HMG!! After all that it still worked out cheaper.

I'll check the invoice to see what it was in the end. My recollection is that I didn't know what the total cost would be until I actually collected the parcel. Outrageous.

Hello Oli,

Unfortunately I have no photos - car is in bodyshop (complete now however except the fog light). They said a bodger had repaired it previously and the backing plate was knackered. You will also recall just now broken the light was.

They offered to "bodge" it for me but it's not my style! I have since bought a complete assembly. I will then have a look at the backing plate with a view to repairing and re-using it with the new lens.

Thanks to all those for replying....
Steve
