Also, try moving the gearbox selector rod in-and-out by hand (in the direction of the yellow arrow on your thumbnail).

Not very likely, but I guess it is possible that the selector rod biasing spring could have dropped a coil or two.

I'm also going to replace part 29, as there looks like there is some play.

I have rose jointed the last connection and its exactly the same!!

So I did a bit more investigation and I now think I have narrowed the problem down.

In the picture below I have highlighted a shaft the comes out of the gearbox. It gives you front/back movement on the gearlever.
Problem is I can pull this out and push it in (as the arrow shows). All I can think is something that holds it inplace inside the box has come loose?

Any ideas?

That would be the selector rod I referred to in my last post.

You can access it by removing the three M6 screws (# 5) holding the retaining plate on. It should then be possible pull the selector out as a complete assembly (# 9).

Detailed inspection of the rod, lever and spring should give you some answers.

Thanks Jonny, and your right, you did point that part out in a previous post!

Hopefully the spring has just compressed over time...
 
[:)] no worries - hope you find something obvious. I think I might have a spare spring, if you need one.

Also, I forgot to mention that you need to remove the associated indexing spring and plug (# 1,2,3 and 4) before you can withdraw the selector rod. Sorry [&o]
 
I am no mechanic so had my linkage sorted as good as new for 220 quid at http://porsche-repairs.co.uk/ hope that helps non spanner people like me !
 
Finally resolved!

Turns out it was the short linkage that isn't included with the short shift kits.

I bought two 8mm rht rosejoints from ebay for around £5 and a length of 8mm threaded rod for about £2.
Took the old linkage off, and used it to measure the new rosejointed linkage against. I used the original two bolts from the old linkage and bolted it in place. This is tricky when the gearbox is on the car, but still achievable.

The mistake I made was the bolt that joins the short shift and the connecting rod (part 19), wasn't located in the dimple properly. At some point between fitting the short shift and the linkage (above) it has slipped, causing play. Once I realised and tightened it up all was well!

I now have about one inch of left-right movement. I guess this is down to manufacturing tolerances and wear from withing the gearbox its self.

One part I might look at changing in the future is the rosejoint that came with the shortshift kit (if its possible) >>

On the kit I bought (from dutschnine) there seems to be a mm or so play between the ball swivel and the casing. On contrast the ball joints I bought on ebay are really tight.
