Fitting adjustable runners to bucket seats

I've got a pair of Cobra Monaco Pro seats in the car at the moment with side mounts bolted into the floor giving me lots of headroom.

I need to put the headlining in and check the clearance with a helmet on. But I would like to be able to fit adjustable runners on the driver's seat if possible, assuming the headroom clearance is sufficient.

But I don't see how you can mount adjustable runners to side mount seats, I've been through the Merlin and Demon Tweeks websites with no joy. Is there an adjustable side mount bracket that anyone knows of? Anything that keeps my bum as close to the floor is a good thing!

I think you would have to install the side mounts to standard adjustable runners and the runners to the car although that doesn't seem pretty safe.
runners can be had here http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod1108/Seat-Sliders-Universal-Porsche-911---944---964---993---968/

Getting an adjustable seat thatll please the MSA can be a challenge, but Id suggest mounting the original runners and fixing the sidemounts to those.

If your currently fitted seats are installed using the original mounting positions then this will be straightforward. If not then youll probably need to space the seats out (as the seat shell is commonly narrower than the space between the sidemounts when using the original seat mounting positions in the floor). I have machined aluminium spacers which look like alloy cotton reels, but they could be made more easily out of cut and drilled alloy bar.

My Recaro's run on recaro runners and Southbound (trimmers) side mounts, Southbound had there own side mounts designed as the recaro's ran too high, leaving little head room. Not sure if these will fit cobra seats but if they fit recaro side mounts they might.

the southbound runners and mounts must be pretty clever as there isnt much room at all. I think if you want runners that's probably worth shelling out for. depends how tall you are as well. (can't see how simon will fit in his car if he uses runners..[:D] )

I'm 5'10" and there's not much clearance for me without runners. That's also with the inside of the sunroof stripped out. You tend to be more vertical in bucket seats.

The mounts I used are the most elegant solution - using the standard mount points in the floor, and with slotted holes to allow some fore - aft adjustability.

I had Cobra Suzuka pros in my turbo s racecar,Cobra supplied me with a runner system, worked fine,I had to remove it for lack of headroom though,I am 6ft 3.I had no head lining as it was stripped.Just had it bolted in by the time I took it to a race.

I have seen these http://www.jdmgarageuk.com/Apex-Seat-Rail but will contact them for more fitting info.

Ultimately I need to wait until I get the headlining in and a helmet on but trying to make sure I'm ready to get the bits I need.

I'm planning on making a trip to Germany in August for a RingGP track day and possibly a couple of tentative ring laps too and my co-driver is a little taller than I am. However, as I'm 6'1 it sounds like the seat would be too high for me anyway on runners. I'll make enquiries into the Apex mounts but glad that it wasn't just me missing something obvious!

I may be stating the obvious here and if I am then I apologize.I have never tried to fit bucket seats into my 944 so I don't have any practical experience of doing it ,but why would you not use the runners etc from a 968 Club Sport? Did they not have runners on bucket seats . I know they were Recaro Pole Positions but surely the runners cant be that different.

Funny you should say that...I was looking at an ad for one this morning and thought exactly the same..[:D]

Mind you, I've looked at PET just now and can't see them anywhere

You know what Colin, I hadn't even thought of that!

I would imagine they would suffer from CS syndrome though whereby their value rises commensurate with their availability :(

Standard seat Runners work fine. I am using them mated to side mounts for my recaros. All you need to do is drill a further set of holes in the side mounts to drop the height of the bucket seat. The standard runners only raise it by about 1.5 cm. I am 6 ft and have room even with helmet.
