Well: they only can go two different ways... If you get it wrong you cant do any harm and youll know because the car wont run properly.
Didn't know it didn't do any damage.
Peanut - sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. I can post a piccie of how it is set out on my car if you like tho'.

Must have had a brainstorm cos I never remove leads without marking them. I'm going to use a perm marker and mark them as suggested [
My car isn't starting at the moment so it is for testing purposes only. I was cleaning the rotar and terminals which had a surprising amount of cr*p on them .
No 4 and No 3 are still connected so I just needed to know the direction thanks a lot

I could be wrong, but I wouldnt expect any damage to be done. Id suggest cranking the car with the HT lead removed and observing the direction of rotation, but Im presuming that he is alone, or hed have done that already. I thought I had a picture on my phone, but it doesnt quite show the distributor cap...
yes alone . no kids and Mrs P at work ...I must get a remote starter for testing purposes

thanks thats what I needed. Now I know the position of No 1 .......incidentally i believe that is a blemish or maybe a bit of dirt on the air filter if I'm not mistaken and that oil filla cap is disgraceful [

Id suggest cranking the car with the HT lead removed
HT lead off, handbrake off, third gear selected, rock car forward/backwards and the slightest movement will tell you the rotor arm rotation direction.

yes thats the easiest way but unfortunately the car was jammed up against an earth bank at the front with the steering on a hard lock . I couldn't shift the car on my own anyway. Just my luck.
Anyway I have the answer now thanks as 944 man posted a picture YESTERDAY[
