farewell

well after many many years and over 2530 posts on this forum I have decided to call it a day.

Over the years I have helped many owners with various problems with their cars particularly hard start and poor running problems and have enjoyed both the research and the camararderi I have found on this and the 928 forum sharing our Porsche ownership experiences.

With the gradual decline in the 944 Porsche values over the past few years I have noticed a gradual shift in ownership, as these cars become financially accessible to a new type of owner, with a different set of values to mine

I am now retired from a long career as an Architect and businessman and I now work 15 hour days 7 days a week caring full time for my 90 year old Father who has dementia and is disabled. Because of this I find I have less time to drive my S2 and to spend on this forum.

So it is with some sadness that I say goodbye to all those owners that I have shared the joys and tribulations of 944 ownership since 1997. If you see me driving my S2 in Somerset I hope you'll give me a wave.[;)]

Peanut I can only hope that your decision is based on sound logic and is a gradual coming to a conclusion rather than a knee jerk reaction to some of the more confrontational posts I have read recently. It can be depressing sometimes when you read sarcastic comments to suggestions of plain common sense; what part of this or that post didn't you understand? Try to consider that everyone is passionate about their Porsche, and probably have passionate opinions. The thing about opinions is just that, they are opinions. I further hope that my posts have been added input and not seeming to be this or that person is wrong. The compression testing thing is good old fashioned common sense and there was no need for some of the confrontational replies. I tried to calm things down and present a logical order in which to proceed, the trouble is now I don't know if I have offended you. Many here will be sorry to see you go. Don't worry about the new type of owner. Their sets of values will inevitably lead to fewer 944s being on the road and keep the price of good ones high. Heaven knows they might even surprise Mr Mac and go north of 10K whilst 10k is still considered a lot of money.

You'll be missed John, both your technical input and your direct style. Don't be a stranger and keep on enjoying that S2

Keep lurking at least, mate, and good luck with what's a very tough job you're doing. Never forget that every good deed you do comes back around. [:)]

there are alot of sad sarcastic posts flying about today , they need stopping or this forum is going in a different direction from what it should be.I thought it was for owners of Porsche cars who for whatever reason need help and advice because they are proud of their car and enjoy it , no matter what their circmstances are. Differences of opinion are always good to learn from but when people start publicly criticing and showing obvious hatred of others via the forum then that needs stopping. It is up to the owner asking for help to decide which is the best advice . Nick

You're leaving? That will be a real, genuine loss to this forum. Really? What can we do to persuade you to stay around? (You're not joining the Mondeo Owner's Club in preference, are you? I know you have two of the things - one to use and a back-up one in case the first one breaks down. [;)]) Mr B.S. (Bedroom Slippers.)

Hang on in there Peanut - one of the joys of our forum is the different characters who contribute here and opinions expressed in what is 99.9% of the time a pleasant and constructive fashion. It's only very occasionally that things get even vaguely silly here these days and the powers that be are very aware and keen on keeping this place the sort of environment you, me and all the regulars want it to be. You will be missed if you do go, hope you decide to hang around and lurk, at least from time to time.

I'll second that. Seriously, if you are at all debating whether to go or not, please reconsider. Oli.

I had made up my mind not to come back here for a while but seeing the flood of email messages in my inbox I just had to return one last time to say thank you one and all for being my 944 cyber buddies As you can see my present commitments don't give me the time I would like with my lovely S2 , you guys and the forum so something has to give.My father has just gone into Hospital this afternoon with suspected gout and a week of incontinence and lifting him in and out of bed has exhausted me mentally and physically. Thank you for your tactful description Diver944 [:D] Tact and diplomacy are skills I have never mastered and I am aware of my rather blunt and forthright delivery. I cannot change my nature now at 62 years of age so I guess I'm stuck with it. Apologies to all who have felt the lash of my tongue in the past, I'm not really like that in real life. You're as likely to get a hug from me as you are an ear-bashing.[:D] I'll look in from time to time to say hello . take care

Words often come across differently when typed and read as opposed to when spoken and heard. I was once told that arguing on the Internet is like running in the special Olympics, win or lose you're still special! You're family situation seems very hard as I'm sure it is, maybe a little 944 distraction from time to time will be just what the dr ordered?

Ive always appreciated your posting style as it is similar to mine. Know it - say it - clear off. I hope that you reconsider over time John. Simon

Best of luck with everything, I haven't met many people from the forum yet but you seem like a genuine 'good guy' and a great son. I'm also new to the forum (and finding the right 944 for me) and understand what you mean with the younger generation not having the same values, hopefully I can help to change that view. From a recently turned 25 year old, hope you both keep well. Adam

Well i hope things start to work out and your life starts to get a little easier so as to free up some of your time, sounds like you have a lot on your plate at the moment, i do not know your situation but if you are the only carer the local social services can help you out with a relief to give you some breathing space. No need to pack the forum in as you will always be welcome, just go into "lurk" mode for a while and take a step back. Good luck and best wishes with whatever turns out.........Jim.

All the best for now, hope you come back maybe in the future at some point, not nice to see anyone leave[&o] Cheers, Mark

Erm, why was I convinced that Peanut's real name was 'Nick'? I was quite convinced that it was ... [] Oli.

I was about to post the same thing. I'm sure it was Nick in his profile before. Why hide your real name?

I'll look in from time to time to say hello . take care
To my mind, one of the main benefits of this forum is that people like Peanut have the knowledge; put the time in to analyse; and then give out information in a direct and easily digestible way. If I ask a stupid question (not unknown) or am about to do something inadvisable to my 944, it is good to have a direct and robust response. So, Peanut, please take time out, then lurk, but if while lurking you see something that you just have to comment on, then it's the right time to return. And very best wishes with the family issues; many of us have been there and I am sure I am not alone in offering mental support... Mike
