Engines

My recently aquired 1983 944 has developed engine problems that i have yet to identify, i think it is the head gasket but havent had time to confirm this yet.
I am playing with the idea of getting another engine to fit whilst i rebuild the one i have, then i started to wonder about going for the 16v engine from a later car, does anyone know how much work is involved in such a swap?
Many thanks Tom

forget the 16v as there not much of a power increase ....if i were you I go the turbo route or not at all :)

If you are talking about the 16v S2 engine then it would be a considerable gain, if the 16v S engine then no I would not bother more for the way that it delivers its power rather than anything else.

Wouldn't bother. Never build a car you can buy; the hassle of changing it (and everything else to make it run, and then everything else to bring the spec of the rest of the car up to a suitable level) makes it not worthwhile.

If you need to do an engine swap then replace it with another engine of the same type. If you want an S or S2 then buy one.

I'd agree unless you are doing it all yourself and really want to take on the project/challenge.

I had exactly that dilemma.
Swap the engine - 1weekend and a couple of evenings.
Make sure its from a square dash if possible.
Oval dash 2.5 will fit but there is quite a bit of fiddling to swap around the ancillary bits.
I did it a couple of years ago, call me if you want to chat about it.

Considering how much it costs to get hold of a 16v engine and then the wiring differences between the square and oval dash cars I wouldn't bother.

I know of an 8v engine pulled from an 83 944 for sale if you're interested.

I may be intrested in the engine you know of, but i am on the Isle of Man so i would have to look into transportation costs. I am also following up a couple of local cars that i may be able to get hold of cheap and strip out myself (been sitting on a driveway for about 4 years)
Cheers for the help Tom
