Engine rebuild recommendations

Again apologies that this is a request relating to a 924 on a 944 forum but its a bit quiet on your little siblings pages!!

So I have an issue with my current 924 turbo engine which looks terminal. Thankfully I have a spare engine on hand which I want refurbished, lightened and balanced etc. before it gets dropped in.

I plan a call into EMC tomorrow to seek advice and some painful news on price etc. But any other engine specialist recommendations? Any ideas of ball park costs for bottom end and top end reconditioning plus performance enhancing modifications.

I didn't think EMC did painful prices?? [:D]

Price all depends on what you have put into the build... You can have all sorts of sexyness in the engine department.

 
This isn't going to be the 'ultimate' re build. The engine I pull out the car is probably going to be the 12 month+ full on stroker, EFI'd, 1.0 bar+ 300 bhp monster!! This current engine build is going to be a good, strong, lightened, balanced, inter cooled intermediary version pushing 220-240ish bhp ideally.
 
I had my S2 engine refurbed by EMC, complete top and bottom end rebuild and it was about £1500 about 2 years ago. So an 8v turbo would be a little less I guess?

I think with the '24 the main problem is availability of engine bearings, isn't it?
 
The bearings can be re-lined, so thats only an inconvenience. Kevin will know this of course. I was under the impression that pistons were an issue too though...?

Whats actually happened to the engine Steve, and do you have an idea on price now? Are you still feeling faint???
 
Not sure what it's worth but I was told by a double 937 owner that pistons were no longer available, and that they were of a poor design to begin with as the section above the upper ring had a tendancy to break apart under "heavy" boost. He showed me such a damaged piston to make his point.

Maybe not what you would like to hear but I'd certainly consider dropping a 951 engine + transmission in there.
 
Yep, pistons are nla, as is many other parts like the crankshaft bearing. The rings are prone to braking and I believe that this may be the issue with cylinder 4. However I haven't had a chance to compression test or investigate further. Only that the spark plug begins to foul up after 5-10 miles and the misfire begins. Pulling the plug wire on 4 changes nothing so clearly the problem cylinder.

I had already bought a spare engine, so I'm going to refurb this first, pull my engine, swap all ancillaries and put back in.

Spoke to Maynard Engines in Stroud today. No quotes or ball park £££'s until he's inspected the patient. Its in the boot of my car ready to be driven up later this week. He's done and doing other Porsche engines and is aware of many nla issues to overcome.

As for finding some nla parts this site has a number of options which are interesting. The guy who runs it has three versions of a 924 turbo engine to be dyno'd in the New Year. So awaiting his results and I'll then rebuild the engine currently in the car. A stroked to 2.2l, EFI'd, hybrid turbo'd, stage 2 cam option seems to be pulling on my wallet strings!! http://garage.ideola.com/prod-2LEngineMods.html

I have considered the 951 option but considering I would have to modify the engine mountings, cross member, torque tube and gearbox. Too much work before you start replacing/refurbing worn components and therefore becomes spendy.
