Engine compartment light

Hi, my engine compartment light has not worked since i collected the car. I have replaced the bulb and lens, placed a meter across the contacts yesterday and i was getting 5v. If i used the body for an earth through the meter i get 12v, i am guessing i have got a short on the earth somewhere? Could anyone point me in the correct direction or would it be easier to attach an earth to the body? Thanks in advance. I know i am asking a lot of questions about my 997, i will get familiar with the car has time passes, but thanks for all your replies, its appreciated.

Assuming it's possible, trace the ground wire back through the engine cover into the bay to see where it goes. It may have caught on something and rubbed, or similar.
I wouldn't just use an alternate ground source in case it affects another area of the loom. There's also the possibility that tracing the actual fault will reveal a problem which might be lurking, so it's worth paying the time to look into it properly.

My engine compartment light didn't work for ages so I went to Halfords to get a bulb fitted it and it still didn't work
When my car was in for service in Dec I just mentioned it to James JCG Brackley and he fitted a new bulb and it worked
The point of all this waffle is make sure its the right bulb[]

PS makes no difference if the side lights are on or off

Hi , I have had this issue checked out by my indie , it's either wire damage or its its programmed to not switch on , it's probably the latter. Thanks for the replies thought.
