Electronic Boost Controllers.

Ex Skyline

Hi Gang, right, the turbo is still down at Jon Mitchells having it's last bits and pieces finished off. I'm supposed to go and pick it up this coming Friday afternoon if, indeed, it is finished. However, i'm seriously thinking of getting him to install an electronic boost controller with a remote boost button whilst he is at it as i am not too keen to keep stopping, lifting the bonnet to make adjustments saga. I am seriously thinking Greddy Profec B Spec 2 electronic boost controllers. Can anyone tell me if they have any experience of said kit installed to their turbo 944? Are they as good as all the Jap car nuts reckon? I used to have a Greddy E-Manage with remote boost button fitted to my Pulsar and it was great! Really made me smile. I have no experience of the Profec B. What do you lot think? Many thanks.

can't help directly with the Greedy Pete but there are many here who can, one thing though noting your comment regarding having to stop, lift bonnet to adjust boost level. I assume your referring to the Manual boost controller as the instructions do indeed suggest fitting it under the bonnet, you can however also fit it in the car, usual place being the ash tray, many have done this including myself, so don't feel that you have to fit an EBC to be able to control boost from the drivers seat.

Pete

My Greddy is in the glovebox on my red turbo,if you want to change from lo to hi boost it's not that far out of the way,and neat and tidy.
I also had it in the glovebox in my Ex track/race turbo.
Looking forward to a writeup on your car and your impressions[:)]

Is it really necessary ever to change the boost setting mid-journey? Surely that's what the throttle pedal is for! I have nothing against a clever electronic system, but for me it would be pointless. I just have my manual controller under the bonnet, and if I ever need to lower the boost (fat chance!), I can.

Mine is on hi boost all the time,I was just pointing out that it's practical and within reach, under bonnet sounds hot and and far away, and visible in the car is not my cup of tea.

I had the exact same Greddy and can thoroughly recommend it. Mine started off in the cubby under the radio but I moved it inside the glovebox. Let us know if the car is ready this week

Do these EBCs operate as a boost and afr guage too?
If so great, if not no I'm not going to be playing with it too much either.

With some aftermarket ECUs it is possible to adjust different peak boost values in function of how much the throttle is opened ("throttle-based boost control"), making the engine easier to control on the twisties as power won't keep building past how much the throttle is opened.

Though I would agree it makes the car feel a bit clinical and less of a challenge when driving on the limit :)

Hi Dave

They do give boost readings but not afr I'm afraid, you need the innovate or similar for that. A top EBC does far more than just control boost though, I can't comment on the GReedy as I've not used one but know that those who have swear by them and for something that's quick and easy to set up they are great. However if you want the best then imho there is only one EBC and that's the APEXi-AVCR.
It's not possible to list all of it's functions here and to be honest you need an expert to give it the justice that it deserves but here's some of the functions. You can monitor in either digital or analogue display, Boost,RPM,Vehicle speed( the unit will not read the 944 ouput for speed),throttle position, solenoid duty cycle and injector cycle( can't remember but may need ertra's for this last item).
With the avcr you can set boost for all gears, you can set boost according to engine rpm, like most EBC's you can preset two maps for boost control but with the avcr you can also add a scramble switch ( bit like Palmer racing cars) to increase boost further at a predetermined level and for a predetermined amount of time.
The unit can also be switched to learning mode where it learns how much boost to use according to the rpm and the gear that is being used. Duty cycle can be adjusted to help reduce turbo lag. The unit also records and displays in graph form what's been going on during that spirited drive up the motorway.
This has only just touched what this unit can do but if you search on Google you'll find everything that you need to know, including installation and user manual's.

Pete

Pete,
That sounds great but its way more than I need. I'll let the experts set the system and leave it at that.
I may go as far as a live map if I change the MAF and turbo but again whatever it is set at as I leave the place will be where it stays.
If they did fully adjustable suspension that you can only adjust once (as long as it was much cheaper) I'd probably have gone for that (they don't do they?) for much as I love my KWs they won't get adjusted!

Thanks for the info guys. Going to do some research on the Apexi-AVCR. Will decide soon and let you know which way i'm going to go. Many thanks chaps.
Pete

Yep, done a bit of research today and i think that a Apexi-Avcr is defo the way forward[8D]. Even though they are about £500 or more and, about two hundred quid more than a Greddy profec B spec 2. Does anyone know if they can be got for any less than 500 quid?

just shop around ...i bought mine for under £300, but that a few years ago, try the Jap Car forums (as in posting. an ad on the wanted section) and Ebay .

you might just get lucky

Hi Ewan, Jon at JMG recommended a Greddy Profec B Spec 2. However, when i mentioned the Apexi supporters club on here, he said that they were an excellent boost controller and if that's what i wanted then, they would be able to fit one to my car and set it up. I think he said one of his guys worked at a tuners before JMG where he used to fit them all the time. Why do you ask?
