Door Mirror

I want to take the driver's door mirror off so i can repair 23 years of stone chips and scratches and repaint it. I have a spare complete one from a 924 which I am thinking of putting on while I do it - the car's my daily driver and I would rather not drive without a door mirror if I can help it. However, the base part which fits on to the door is a slightly different shape. Does anyone know if this will fit - I am not concerned about the electrics as I will not bother connecting it up for the short time it will be on the car.
 
It's a different since also mirror electric motor is different including special steel plate where electirc motor is attached. Design was changed from 1985½ models.
