Door Lock Had It!

OK, so the big guy seems to be getting on a bit now and clearly the drivers door lock is worn...to the point where I can actually open it with the tip of a screwdriver!

What are my options here? Ideally I'd still like to keep it with one key fitting all locks but would sacrifice this for a cheaper alternative than changing the lot! I've looked at replacing just the drivers handle and lock (can't seem to find just the barrel and cylinder) and have two keys (one for the door, the other for the rest). Does anyone know if a MK1/2 Golf door lock barrel/cylinder would fit instead of a Porsche one as the handles look identical and I can get the entire set for less if need be?!

Does anyone know if a good locksmith could repair the old one?!

The locks can be replaced and matched to the other locks on the car, and yes old Golf / Passat barrels and lock "gates" will fit. A bit fiddly but certainly a DI Y job.
If you bought a couple of locks, you should get enough bits to rebuild yours to match your key.

Most likely VW part won't . They fit to older style handle, but '91 might be a different story.
 
golf barrels do fit but the dont fit right they are sligtly smaller you could poss strip them and build the golf internals into the porsche barrel
 
Sent mine to the main dealers and Jonathon in the parts department matched two barrels from a spare key i sent and fitted them for £30 was a few years ago, but cerainly worth a chat with your local dealer parts guys to see if they can sort you out.
 
Mine had different locks in both doors and ignition when I got it so I needed 3 keys! I altered both door locks to be the same as the ignition. Getting the barrels out is fiddly and can be time consuming the first time you do it. Here are some notes from my experience (apologies if some are obvious).
1. Clarks garage has a good write up on removing the handles.
2. Protect the paintwork around the handle.
3. I managed to remove the barrel without disconnecting the "?" shaped lever that goes down into the door - I twisted the handle so I could just get a stubby screwdriver to the screw at the back that secures the barrel.
4. Before unscrewing the barrel take a note of how the spring is fixed.
5. On later handles there is a microswitch on the inside of the handle. Take a note of how the actuator is positioned - if you put it back together wrongly the lock will automatically unlock/lock when you lock/unlock and you will have to remove the handle again (very annoying when you think you have just finished the job - I talk from experience!).
6. I managed to alter my locks by changing the gates around and filing a few down where they protruded a little, but it sounds like you need some new gates.
7. To ensure you don't lose the tiny springs that are inside the barrel take it apart in a clean bowl or polythene bag.
8. I had great difficulty getting the white plastic rod back on the handle afterwards as it kept dropping down. My solution was to hold it up by putting a piece of wire with an "s" shape in the end through the hole. I was then able to hold the rod in position next to the ball on the handle and push it on with a finger while withdrawing the wire.
 
Although the Clarkes etc write ups say you can remove the door handle without removing the door card, getting the damned thing apart and then back together is fiddley in the extreme. I would suggest that it's worthwhile removing the door card so you can see inside - and get fingers etc to where those annoying little plastic connectors clip on. It also means you can re-install the handle with the rods clipped onto the handle end, then once the handle is on you reconnect the bottom ends - rather easier than trying to connect the top ends while at the same time aligning and installing the handle!

It would also allow you to examine the inner lock mechanism - mine has so much slack in it, the black operating lever no longer opened the door (from outside). To get it out and replace it involved removing not only the door card, but also the rear guide channel for the window.

I took the door card and the plastic vent cover off hoping that I could get to the back of the handle and lock mechanism as this would certainly be much easier. However, there is so much in the way that it is impossible to reach the ends of the rods that way, at least not without removing more parts or having extremely thin double-jointed arms and fingers.

Just an update:

It's all fixed! Turns out that the cylinder was just completely filled with dirt and grit and had jammed open (as if the key was in it), hence the cylinder was free to rotate in the barrel. I found this out only after purchasing the Golf door handle and lock! [:mad:] Turns out I wouldn't be able to use the Golf cylinder anyway as it didn't have the teeth on it needed to operate the central locking.

I took the cylinder out and removed all the gates, making sure I didn't lose the springs! Put it all back on the car and it works a treat. Plus I replaced the old spring with the new one from the Golf set.

You're right though, the door handle is a pig to remove and replace. Luckily I managed to get a short screw driver bit onto the back of the cylinder holding it in place with a pair of pliers to unscrew the screw and remove the cylinder from the handle so didn't have to completely remove the handle assembly.

So...anyone want a second hand Golf door handle complete with a set of keys?! One careful owner and only missing a spring?! [;)]
