The biggest frustration with my 944 is its appetite for the right rear turn indicator fuse. It used to go through one a week till I had a poke around cleaning the bulb contacts and removing some soggy bits of foam a while ago. It improved for a while but has reverted to form in spades. This week the fuse has gone after two or three right hand turns.

Any suggestions? At this point I'm on the verge of sending it into the shop to say don't give it back till its fixed- cost no object if they sort this and the summer hot start problem.

well Ian... it has to be a short somewhere as I'm sure you are aware and as you have discovered not easy to solve. Things to do if not already, strip out all bulb holders and clean thoroughly, don't forget the side indicator just in case. Replace indicator relay in case it is periodically shorting to earth. This leaves wiring and indicator stalk, check stalk has no loose wires nearby shorting it out when operated and the really boring job is tracing all wires to check for shorts. You will find it eventually but as you have already discovered it's a pain. Personally I would never take it into a dealer or independent as its a license for them to make money and if they give up and hire in an auto electrician your looking at another £60phr on top.

if it stopped when you had a poke around id try and trace the supply wire around that area (ie the area you disturbed) and see if its chafed or cracked at any point, especially where it the loom touches or is close to the chassis. had a car kept blowing fuses and it turned out a wire had been pinched where the rear lights fed into the body from the boot - was intermittent and annoying as hell until i found it.

as Pete says the relay is another candidate.

Plan your routes so that they involve only left turns.

As you say there were soggy bits of foam, check the area for damp.

Did you change the effected bulb? If so is it now corroded?

Once that area is proven ok check all lights for damp, clean all contacts and then move on to the switch, wiring connections etc.

PS. Don't forget to check the earth points on the body.
