Do these new 944 turbo cv joints look right?

Just ordered these from Bert Gear. They are GKN units in boxes with new boots, circlips, grease packs etc. only thing I am unsure about is the heat marks as well as the fact the central spline pieces seem to have marks on them as well as blue match marks where they seem to have been taken apart.

I have spoken with Bert and he is talking to supplier to double check. He was also under the impression they would be brand new units and that they should be black. Just not too sure about them as one of the cages can move freely and one seems quite tight. Has anyone else fitted the GKN ones? Did they look like this? Just worried there may have been a mixup. Would hate to go through the hassle of fitting them to find there is a problem.

I would rate GKN brand very highly

the heat marks are from the local hardening process applied to the grooves which the ball's run in. Extremely high load application as you would expect.

not sure about the tightness, certainly there should be no backlash

also, Bert has been at this a long time and wont sell rubbish IMO

I was wondering if the burn marks were a side effect of the hardening process. Yes absolutely agree Bert would not sell rubbish and was not suggesting that at all. Was just worried he said they are normally totally black. Was hoping someone had had a new set that looked the same to put my slightly ocd mind at rest

There does not seem to be any backlash at all. Only the cage moves on one of them and not the other. I'll talk to Bert again tomorrow once he's chatted with GKN.

I was going to say. Bert has always impressed when it has come to sourcing good quality bits in the past .

Those look perfectly normal; the blueing is due to the local case hardening, as already mentioned.

GKN do quality stuff. You can rely on them.

Just sent some hi res pics through to Bert and he's confirmed that that is how they should look so all good. Just waiting for a few more bits and I can hopefully install before Bedford.

First class service from Bert - please don't think I was doubting that.
