Digital Cameras

New member
In response to Ken' s suggestion (and in the interests of finding out what I become after ' Active Member' - no jokes at this point, please!) -

I am thinking of buying a new digital camera.
A lot of them seem to have trouble with reds - a bit of a problem with my intended use in mind...

The Canon Powershot G3 seems to fit the bill, though. Has anyone got experience of this camera?

For those interested, there' s a superb website at DPReview

Hi John,

I bought Claire a G2 last Christmas. It is a lovely peice of kit. I guess the G3 will be better! I used DP review a lot to determine my choice as well, seems to be some good reviews there, and far better info than I could give.

Hi John,
Another site with useful information is www.ukdigitalcameras.co.uk

As we said before both Elliot and myself are very pleased with our
Fuji Finepix S602 Z

John Miles has a similar camera and a Red Porsche 964, why not contact him for an opinion www.porsche964.co.uk

Good luck,

I agree with Ken John, i have found no fault on red problems with any fuji digital and ive had 3 of them and now on the greatest.....it was THE award winning camera and is now £300 less than it was last year. another plus is that it takes smartmedia, compact flash and ibm microdrive upto 1gb and uses 4 x AA HiMH rechargables which last an age
John Miles site is full of pics of his Red 964 and ive had no reason to say it isnt a good reflection of his car and his is the 6800Z earlier version which i had also but sold it to another 964er who is very impressed with it, why did i sell it ? Because it didnt have sound with the AVI video.
Also, please remember any digi pic you dont like the colour of you can alter in a photo package, you can even turn yours into a rubystone at the touch of a button !!

I would vote for the Fuji. Wins all the reviews. 6x optical zoom and the same controls as any 35mm SLR - SP, AP, Manual, Slow flash etc. Handles well and not too heavy. I have no probs with colour balance (John, I can see your current camera has) and it is excellent for low light shots (see Here for some examples).

But if you can stretch to £2000 then the Nikon D100 or Canon D60 would be nice! [:)]

John
PS Looking forward to some great wallpapers!

I agree. I' ve got the S602Z and it rocks. You can use the 1Gb IBM Microdrive as well and the video quality is better than most digital cameras. The 6MegaPixel mode does a resonable job of fooling you into thinking you' ve got a 6MP camera when it' s only got 3.....

For Digital camera reviews as for any other " review" the most important aspect is impartiality.
I use http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html for my reviews, but as of yet haven' t bought anything......just keeping my options open.

Somebody up there hates me!

My monitor has had a gun fail - everything is washed in heavy green so I can' t tell any colours!

I am in the process of getting a new PC anyway - oh well, I suppose I' ll just have to imagine what all these nice digital colours look like.

Now might be a good time for someone to post a picture of a green car!

I' m actually getting used to my green cyberworld.
Unfortunately, this has the effect of making the real world too red!

(TOO red? Must be some mistake, surely?)

Hi John,
I hope that having to purchase a new PC is not going to put back your purchase of a digital camera.
If you are not sure yet which PC deal to go for, I can recommend DELL,I have had mine a year now and still extremely pleased. A number of my clients at the same time, went to some of the other PC outlets and have encountered various after sales problems.

Hope your[:' (] soon becomes[] with the resultant[;)]

Hi John
I bought a Fuji from http://www.digitaldepot.co.uk and have been really impressed with the excellent quality. The price was the best on the market and it came the day after I order it. Additional memory cards are really cheap from here as well. Why not take a look, the site may be useful to yourself and others.
Best of luck,
Peter

Thanks, everyone.

I have so much on at the moment that I can' t find the time to actually get any of it done!

I took a look at Dell, but the black casings put me off because it' s going to live in a cabinet, which is already a bit dark.

I' ve been looking at PC Advisor magazine and think I might go for a Multivision, which a friend also has.

The jury' s still out on the camera.

Mike,

I thought of a Shuttle, but they have some issues at the moment, 20/1000 returns on one of my favourite intenet sites, mail me offline if you want the address.
A colleague has had 3 returned already, all differing versions, i.e. ss50, ss51 ss41 and so on.
But the essential is still spot on, build your own I have for the last 5 years and still do.

I once told myself that I WOULD build my next PC.

However, the need is too urgent and, I just have too much other stuff to do at the moment []

PC Advisor' s next month issue highlights the TIME Neptune 2600. I like the idea of a couple of front-mounted USB ports. It' s extremely well specced for the money, also. Looks like this could be the one.

The camera is either going to be the Fuji or the Canon - not sure if I' ll get it before or after the PC.

Anyone got any bright ideas on how to transfer files from old to new PC? Network? Zip & Floppy?

Have a word with John Miles, He set up my PC for me, transfered the files. Set up Broadband and all my Domain Names. etc.,

Give you haven' t got this phone number and would like to contact him, give me your number, I will ask him to call you.

Ken

John, Please don' t go that route...If you have to get one off the shelf please look at Evesham or Dan, something of that ilk. They have better quality support and the internals are of a better quality origin.

Kevin

With DELL I have three years On Site maintenance ( is that the word) Only cost £90.

I' ve called them twice, for small things that you guys could have done yourselves ! They were with me within 24 hours, No problem at all.[:D]

Sales team and delivery very efficient.

Ken

Hi Ken,

Dell are ok, but customer support by phone at least is based in India, otherwise they are a reputable firm with good gear inside.

John, with reference to the PC Advisor article I would say this. The advertising market is shrinking, the Magazine market has suffered turmoil, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that several magazines are published by the same firms, namely Haymarket. It is also not beyond the realms of possibility that marketing forces put pressures on magazines to put product endorsements ahead of objectivity.

As for file transfer, all I do is to slave the old drive onto the new system and pull all the files across. I have also burned them all to CDR when slaving the drive is not possible. Thus keeping a backup in the process

Kevin.

Yes I was one of the first people to find that out, but never the less I still got On Site maintenance. Even if the Techician did arrive by Flying Carpet the next Day[:-]
