Diary of a 997

Another year and MOT time! I really don't like going to the dentist and the MOT station:( However she passed :)
Couple of advisories though:
1, Rear anti roll bar linkage ball joint covers deteriorated, to be honest I'm really not sure what these are, will investigate.
2, Slight play in NS steering rack inner joints - again will investigate.

I'm sure the wording on MOT's are changing or have changed over a number of years to really baffle people, I'm not a full time mechanic but would consider myself competent around a spanner, but the wording in my opinion seams overly complicated, as I'm sure when I poke my head under the car its quite simple.

Really enjoying this thread Marc. Unfortunately I don't have the experience, or mechanical know-how, to attempt what you have over the last couple of years. I do, however, learn much from your posts. Please keep it going.

My Oil service light popped up on the dash last week, so i thought it was time to change the oil. On the weekend got the bits and set to work. My sump plug decided to ‘strip’ itself almost immediately after seeing the Allen key :-(. Cut out a nice grove and tapped it out. Some mobile one and new sump plug and all is good, reset the oil service light and all happy. While under there I looked at the drop links, which did have splits on the gaiters, so decided to replace them too. :)
 
Long time without any issues :) Just enjoying the drive. However a couple of weeks ago I noticed some discolouration from the rear of the arch. Nothing too much, but I thought it was a good idea to investigate.

The old tin worm strikes :( I know the car is gen 1 and is now an old car, but I was still quite surprised to see the rot! I cut out quite a lot, removing all the rust, it was all on the exterior panels and thankfully clean and like day one on the inner.

New plates made and then welded into place, now have to clean and fill a little and hopefully get colour matched and respray the area.

Great diary this, wish I had the time/space/tools to do any required jobs on my GTS (fortunately none cropped up yet)
 
Hi CWC, Thanks for the reply, I don't have lots of space, but I can't help but tinker:) I haven't been able to fully finish, as the weather isn't really stable to get the right finish for top coating and lacquer.

While waiting I thought I would give her a full service. I noticed the pulleys looked a little worst for wear, so thought I would replace.

Worth doing, all had a little play in them, and the aluminium spacers on two had oxidized really badly and broke up in my fingers.
