took my 86 lux out on sunday, popped down the pub for half hour or so.
car started up fine pulled away 1st,2 giving the car some stick put it into 3rd gear no ooomph car ticking over but no throttle gave it a second and the all fine for the rest of the day.

it has not done this before but in occasion has briefly hesitated then carried on as normal.
car is in good mechanical condition and up to date with servicing.
any ideas ?

The first thing to look at is the DME relay, closely followed by the fuel pressure regulator. You can make a DME bypass to rule out the relay (actually relays as there are two in the one outer case) and if the problem continues then Id try removing the lead from one fuel injector to see whether the problem clears: if so youll need a new FPR. Not an exhaustive diagnosis, but a quick way to test for both likely problems.

Also look at Clark's garage.
 
The DME was making my car cut out intermittently for a month or two on my 220, buy a new one and fit it, if it is not this it will fail eventually, you want one starting with a 993 part number
 
I had something similar. Turned out to be a vacuum tube at the bottom of the engine that had perished.

i have changed the following with second hand spares some time ago:
f.p.r and the dme relay
i will investigate and test further

For £20 or so I'd just get a new DME relay myself. Not a part that's worth buying used IMO as they are so prone to failing.
