Cup 1 Mags...

Last year I purchased a tired set of four factory Cup 1 Alloys to replace my Magnesium wheels which I intend to mothball. Spit 'n' Polish collected the alloys from me last week and have just phoned and said they are unable to refurb these wheels as guess what...........they are Magnesium ! To be honest, I find this hard to believe as none of them have the raised 'Magnesium' wording stamped in the usual place.
Were any genuine Magnesium Cup 1's supplied without the raised lettering.
I'm a bit confused.......

It's conceivable that they have been refurbed before and the "Magnesium" lettering machined off, or painted over. However presumably the numbers next to the valve stem would also be invisible in this case ..... are they ?
My guess would be that the person who is looking at them has seen some mag versions before and assumes that all wheels of that design are made of magnesium. I'd ask them to get a second opinion !

If you can get hold of the part numbers (on the back of the spokes somewhere) you can find out if they really are magnesium.

Just received an update from S&P !
Apparently it is just the rears that are Mag's. The front two are manufactured by Speedline.
I'm having them all delivered back to me tomorrow with the worn tyres removed and I'll post the relevant part numbers here as soon as I can.

A rather happy result if they do turn out to be mags (assuming you paid boggo Cup 1 money for them !). As Ian says, the part number will tell all ..............

Jamie, this I have to say, is a bit of a result ! What would you say could be the potential value of the two rears ?

The back of the magnesiums should look like this - 'SM' logo is the giveaway (as you probably know they manufactured the mags for Porsche). You can also tell from the weight if they are mags - especially with the tyres off. Make sure you tie them down so they don't float away. [;)]

Gosh those Mags look clean Rich! Will they ever go on the car again?

Nick...some people seem to have all the luck. If that was me, I'd have bought some Mags, gone for refurb and told they were steel reps![&:][;)][:D]

The way my luck is going at the min I'd have bought them as mags and found they were steel AND bent and no use at all....!!!!!!

Depends on the condition really ........ Tatty and needing a refurb, possibly a grand or so. Mint, I would guess anything up to two grand ?????????

Jamie

Jamie, I've just located a pair of 9 x 17 factory Cup 1 alloys for the rear. I've now had the other four wheels returned from S&P and yes, the rears are indeed mags. I do not need what would be 2 sets of rear mags so I will be putting these up for sale.
If you or any of the '64RS chaps want first shout before I go the Flebay route, let me know. I've since been told they could make 1k a piece, if they are not bent.

Hi,

you should first check the part number which is inside: 965.362.128.10

There are different Porsche wheels which are aluminum wheels with magnesium alloy. These wheels are not RS wheels.
So you might have wheels which only have a magnesium alloy.

Would the missing lettering from the front face - 'magnesium', 'SM for Porsche', etc - have a negative effect on the price too? I would have assumed a grand per wheel is for mint condition with all the lettering in place and readable?

Just re checked....both the rear wheels have the SM logo and the part numbers on both are: 965.362.128.10. These are the ones all right !!

Lucky you ............ I sense a tidy profit for you here ! Thankfully I have a full set of mags (plus a set of BBS race mags and a set of OE Cup 1s), so I'm ok for wheels for now thanks !!!
As Rich mentioned, the lack of lettering on the face would cause some concern - it may still be there under the paint, otherwise they have been machined and may not stand up to a further re-furb - possibly a bit of a gamble for a potential purchaser. Personally I think you'll struggle to get a grand a piece in anything other than A1 condition, but you just never know, it all depends how badly someone wants them .....

Good luck !

Jamie

What a result; my question is just how magnesiums off a 964 RS get mixed up with regular cups!

Either someone has had some wheels refurbed before and the shop has mixed them up; how sick must that owner be! Or i suppose are they stolen?

Still thats a lucky find!

Indeed....very strange. I've had all four wheels for well over a year and other than remove them from the back of the Focus and stack them in storage ( with the old tyres on ) they haven't moved until Spit 'n polish collected them for re furbing last week. Certainly now with tyres removed, the weight difference is obvious.
