Crank Seal Leak! Advice Needed!

Hi All

Just trying to stop the constant drips from under my b reg 8v. It's about a drip every 6 seconds so have taken the cam belts and housing off to get at the crank seal behind but two things I would like a second or third opinion on:
1) the oil looks more spread around than I thought and I wonder if it is coming from anywhere else as well, any ideas?
2) Is this an early water pump? it says R1983 on the casting so I presume "yes" but I just wanted to order the right parts if it isn't!

Thanks in advance and sorry for photo quality but best I could do with no flash!

Looks like it is an old pump, don't know if the 1983 is a date stamp, the OEM pumps do have one on them. It looks like your crank seal is well goosed. Look for the cleanish parts, that is where the oil will be flowing from.

Hi Tim

As well as changing the seal I'd check the toothed drive that the seal seals against, I suspect that you'll find a groove worn into the outer sleeve that the seal seals against. There are two types and I suspect yours will be of the earlier type, not sure on price, probably £40 bracket but I'd certainly change this along with the crank seal to get the best er seal.
To many 'seals' in that sentence.......:)

thanks again!
I have just ordered that extra bit so hopefully this will stop the cars from behaving badly and embarrassing my wife with the marks it leaves on peoples drives!
