Coolant

I think the manual calls for 'Phosphate free' antifreeze. I need to do a coolant change at some point as well... anyone have any advice on which brands are suitable in the UK? I couldn't find any labelled as such in Halfrauds.

I noticed yesterday the coolant is a little on the low side.

Can I simply top up with distilled water and anti freeze?

Is there a specific coolant I should use? Or is there one that works best for a '91 944t?

Thanks in advance.

Here's some which is phosphate-free. [link=http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-903-motul-inugel-optimal-ready-to-use-cooling-liquid-anti-corrosion-and-anti-freeze.aspx]http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-903-motul-inugel-optimal-ready-to-use-cooling-liquid-anti-corrosion-and-anti-freeze.aspx[/link] I haven't tried it and I don't know offhand what Hartech or Promax put in, but I would ring them for the brands they use, if I needed a top-up between services.

Long life "red" coolant - a bit vague I know -is what I was recommended to use. Make sure what you put in is the same colour as that which is already there. I gather you can get a reaction in the system if you mix blue and red.

Hello - agree with checking with the Porsche shops re what they use. The phosphate free product highlighted above says not to mix with non-organic products - It is likely that your existing coolant is non-organic. The key point for your 944 is that the coolant is appropriate for aluminum cooling systems. Most are these days - but ensure the label states it. In Canada - the newer "long life" coolants are red but traditional color has been green - not seen a blue one yet. Oh - and here our pre-mix coolants are good for at least -34C with the desirable target -40C (it will get that cold in western Canada at least once a winter....)
