Converting to pre impact bumper

I'm sorry if this has been covered in the past but I am interested in converting an SC to look like a pre 73. I would look to buy a mechanically sound but slightly tatty SC and have the bodywork only changed as I'm not after an authentic RS replica, I just like the look.

Has anyone had this done? If so could they let me know who did the work and how much it cost? Also, I would be very interested to hear of any potential pitfalls to avoid.

Many thanks

Tom

Tom I suggest you contact Nick Moss who runs http://www.early911.co.uk/
He specialises in this sort of thing and is nery knowledgeable on what is 'correct' . Tell him I sent you, let us know what you decide to do I'm personally very interested in this type of conversion as I'm sure others are too.

Noticed a letter on this subject in the August edition of 911 & Porsche World. Letters page, answers by JZ Machtech. Seemed to give a useful summary.

Thanks, I've given him a bell and left a message. I'll let everyone know what he recommends when I've spoken to him.

After speaking to Nick at Early911 I can summarise his advice as:

Any pre-1989 (pre 964) can be backdated to the pre-73 RS look. It is vital to start with a sound, rust free, car - you will spend much more restoring a poor car than the amount that you save on the initial purchase. Any slight rust bubbling evident almost always means much more rust underneath. Get the car inspected by an expert - you will save much more than the £200 fee. There is no need to do the interior at the same time as the body work. If you do not need absolute historical accuracy you can save a significant amount as things like the chrome window trims are expensive. If you are happy with the colour of the donor vehicle and the paintwork is in good condition then a full respray is not necessary - but most people like to go for white to emulate the RS look. Black is the hardest colour to get looking good as it shows up every ripple (of which there are likely to be a few on a 25 year old car). The conversion to a rust free car with no colour change will cost in the region of £6000.

I can thoroughly recommend anyone thinking of backdating a car to speak to Nick. He is very friendly, patient and knowledgeable.
