Converting an auto to a manual?

This might seem a silly question but i'm new to the forum so i guess i'm allowed so many of these... ha

I've seen a lot of low mileage, rust free 944s for sale but most of them seem to be Automatics. I was considering whether or not buying one and attempting to convert it to a manual? Has anyone else ever had this thought or would it be just to much work to even consider? The main parts i can think would need changing would be the gearbox, gearstick and the pedals but i'm hoping there isn't much more.. I've done a few searches but couldn't find anything specific to do with this but will happily raise my hands if it's already been discussed.

and front bell housing with clutch slave cylinder, flywheel, clutch and probably prop shaft and torque tube - in other words the whole driveline - not just the gearbox.

You will also need a new brake master cylinder (or at least the reservoir) to provide fluid to the clutch cylinders. I'm guessing you considered the clutch master cylinder as part of the pedal assembly.

You might want to get a PET (parts catalog) off the internet (usually you can find a free download) so you can see what is different. I would also give you an idea of how much work it is to change out the parts.

 
No need to change the radiator, although it does have extra fittings on it, then can be plugged with plastic caps. Its still a big job.

That said Ive seen people convert early to oval dashes, along with the instruments, switch gear and heater, and Ive seen a 1988 oval altered to look like a 924. Maybe wothwhile if youre able and its a keeper - Tom-Barks and James O have both taken on a great deal more, I think.
 
Perfectly doable if you have the tools, time, space and inclination. I would want the whole manual car, all the parts are in front of you.
Factor well over a grand though even with a donor car, the clutch alone isn't cheap and some parts are bound to need renewing.

From the top of my head:-

Gearbox
Torque tube?
Gear linkage
Clutch
Flywheel
Bellhousing
Clutch fork and assembly (not cheap new)
Clutch hydraulics
Pedal assembly
Throttle cable
Dashpod

If you go to that much effort, why not put a bigger engine in at the same time? Rusty S2 or turbo would be my choice of donor. I know 'never build what you can buy' but where's the fun in that?
 
Actually this is quite easy task to accomplish. Most of the parts are the same, like bell housing etc. Even 968 Tiptronic uses normal 944 bellhousing. There are just plastic covers where slave cylinder is located. If i remember correctly also TT is the same. There are all attachment points available for clutch pedal etc. (at least there are on LHD cars). No need to change radiator, you can use transcooler for example to cool power steering system. No need to change tachometer either.
