cone filter and water ingestion.

Today whilst traveling up a very wet M40 my car pulled that much water into the airfilter it died at tickover and refused to start.
Looks like i got away with it as she's now running fine after recovery to the services and a good drying out.
What I think happened was the crank pulley fired water up onto the bottom of the filter as it was soaked (foam filter), possibly made worse due to the toothed wheel I have fitted on the end of the crank. That or water coming through the intercooler/Rad soaked it.

A cut up plastic bottle is now around the filter. The car did another 200 miles in pissing rain without issue

Its ironic as I was going to move the filter to behind the headlight and go full megasquirt but decided not to for the journey to ensure it was reliable.

Just a warning to anybody not running the standard airbox really. Also I'm wondering if a mesh type cone filter would let the water straight into the intake rather than acting like a sponge.

With the oiled paper type filter on my vittesse maf (on the coupe) the filter is behind the headlight. When it had been parked in heavy rain it would be a pain to start and run initially due to a soggy filter restricting the intake. I fitted a small 'divertor' which stopped it happening - it was cut from a plastic file and stuck to the leading edge of the bonnet - just visible in the pic below.

Cunning, will make sure I do the same when I move the filter from behind the rad.

Put a hydro shield, specifically designed for cone filters, and call it a day.
