Clutch issues !!

Hi All
A couple of days ago my 944 2.7 started to have a very 'light' feel to the clutch when first depressed. Then yesterday it would depress all the way to the contact point with no resistance. It also would not retract to original position. Drove it today, same light feel to point of contact, and stil sticking down, but functioning absolutely fine when changing gear!
HELP please !!

I had similar experience with my S2. "our" diagnosis was that the release bearing was hanging up on the guide tube. I "fixed" it by running it up (in anger) to about 6000 RPM before shifting up - 2nd thru 4th. Clutch travel and engagement returned to "normal".

P.S. - when you say it would not retract to original position I understand that to mean the pedal returns to original position but you can feel that resistance of the pressure plate has stopped very low in the travel. Even though the release bearing (and therefore the pressure plate) was not going full travel - clutch engagement was enough that no slippage was felt while disengagement was complete and shifting was normal.

Hi Donald,

As has been suggested, could be the master or slave cyliders, or the pipe between them. If it's the master there's often fluid leaking around the clutch pedal, but to be honest it's likely that both are equally as worn out so replacing both isn't a bad idea assuming niether has any history of being replaced. Bert was the cheapeast last time I looked, unless anyone else has bought them recently?

That's an excellent approach! I try to do this as often as possible as a precautionary measure. Makes the driver feel better too.

Bruce's point is a good one - is the clutch always returning to its usual position? With a slave / master problem the clutch pedal sometimes (and then always) will not return all the way back up. You can get it back up manually. In a more major failure it will drop to the floor.
