Clutch and gear linkage problem

Hi again,
Crawled under the old girl this weekend to fit my shiny new clutch slave cylinder, checked the lever etc. all ok, cleared all the old fluid out and duly fitted and bled the new one, all seemed ok until I re-fitted the starter motor and lowered her to the ground, I pushed the pedal down again to approx half way (over the spring tension) the pedal went to the floor on it's own! I pulled it back up and pumped it a bit and again it seemed ok, but after a while it did exactly the same again, is it possible the master cylender is also faulty?

Also, is it possible to get gear linkage bush sets? my gearstick is more like a joystick, in neutral, the stick moves all over the place and it is impossible to select reverse.

Cheers guys

Geoff

My indie recommended replacing both at the same time. I think that was partly as they can fail at similar times and partly because the parts are relatively so cheap it's a good "while you're in there" fix - and it means the bleedin' bleeding operation is not going to have to be repeated until it's time for a fluid change.

If you do a search there is a previous discussion about gear linkages -- I believe Jon sells one.
What I found with mine was that it wasn't entirely the linkage but the top bush of on top of the gearlever and the side mounting point having been welded on to the gearshift tube that runs to the back (normally held on by a circlip that takes up some of the play). Might be worth taking your gearlever knob off and seeing if you have the correct bushes/circlip(s) underneath it.

Just watching "The Garage" on Discovery Turbo, the scots guy in Spain with the garage (English Mobile Mechanics??), he had a 944 with exactly the same clutch problem, they changed the slave, then the master, then the entire clutch and nothing sorted it, it turned out to be the clutch lever! []
I have just received my new master cylender and got it fitted and intend to bleed the system over the weekend along with a few other jobs, hopefully this should sort my problem.

Got a price for the linkage repair kit from Porsche Apart and will be ordering this shortly, does anyone know if this is a straightforward job?

you sure are spoiling that baby Geoff [:D]

hope you can take some pics of the linkage. Its sure to be useful for the rest of us and for the new faq section.
good luck

Replacing gear linkage on top of the gearbox is a very straightforward job. Only problem you will have is if the stabilising bar is worn / loose. This connects onto the gearbox housing on the drivers side so is a PITA to get at, luckily mine was OK. You have to drop the exhaust to get at the linkage.

Well, I finally managed to find the time to bleed the clutch system now the new master and slave are in place... Brilliant!! just as I had hoped, a perfect clutch ~~ Next job is the gear linkage, hopefully this will not only stop the stick from resembling a joy-stick, but also enable me to get reverse so I can get her out of my drive!!.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the colour code? I know it is white [&:] but I have seen a few listed as Alpine White, Grand Prix White and others.

Any help would be much appreciated.

it turned out to be the clutch lever!
Did they fix the clutch lever? - Was it replaced or repaired somehow? Just asking because my clutch is playing up at the moment. When the car is cold, there is little resistance in the pedal, and sometimes it 'locks' down and I have to get my toe under it to pull it back.
I'd normally think this was more likely to be the cylinders failing, but I've oiled the pedal mechanism and that has really helped.

My pedal was straight to the floor and needed to be pulled back up as you describe yours, I replaced the slave cylinder which gave me a small amount of pedal but eventually stayed on the floor, I fitted the master cylinder, cleared out all the fluid and replaced it with DOT 5.1, now it is perfect.

Through the process of elimination, I found it was the master cylinder that was at fault.
