Clicking sound behind the dash

Hello driving home yesterday from a fantastic day in Brighton for a short time there was a clicking sound from behind the dash sounded like a relay of some sort. Don't tell me that its the tick of death!!

Hi Greg, good to meet you yesterday and hope to see you at some more "meets"

Sorry to hear the bad news but yes that is the tick of death and you will need deep pockets to fix, sorry I can't help with the cure as I don't know what it is or if indeed it can be fixed.

The only thing I could do is give you say £1k maybe £1.5k tops to help you out ( I need a few spares that's all) and you could then put this helping hand towards the other one, I believe we discussed that briefly yesterday.

Catch up soon.

Sorry I couldn't be any help, do you know which side the noise was coming from? Someone should be along soon who may know.

Alarm relay ticking on / off / on / off at a 1 second interval for 20 seconds......like mine did in the heat last week, (and my old black car did 6 years ago)

I had the horn buzzer disconnected previously.

For some reason the car will run while all this is happening

The pre -85.5 cars have the unit behind the radio, the later oval dashes are behind the front passengers feet. They are not fitted to every car (black box - cigarette box size, 2 plugs (one x8way & one x2way)

just a possibility, my be wrong and its the air-con doing something.

It sounded like it came from behind the clocks it was not a rhythmical click more random. But lasted about a minute then gone and didn't return. The car doesn't have air con.

My old turbo did this all the time. I would suggest it's perhaps a near normal variant of an otherwise normal but noisy relay from the fuse box.

It is the sound of rusting sills.

No, really, I think it is the door contacts not quite working and sending the relay for the interior light mental, mine does it.

I would also check (but there would be around a 20 second interval between each click in this case IMO) to see if you vacuum pump is clicking for your HVAC system (the heater). My S2 used to do this alot, since the heater valve was compensating for the seized heater flap solenoid, so the air coming into the car would either be quite cold or quite warm!

Sills faintly fizz. Id guess faulty door switch too.

+1 for that - that's just reminded me I had this problem a few months ago. Not quite sure how but I fathomed out off my own back that this may be the issue so bought two new door switches from OPC. They weren't at all expensive (peanuts from memory) and it did sort the issue Greg

Thanks Andy. I keep meaning to ring porsche and order some bits and that's the sort of job even I could do change a few switches. When's the next get together? Is it silverstone? If so need to pull my finger out
