Clicking noise from air vents

Hi all,

I'm very new to Porsche ownership and still getting used to what's normal and what's not. Hopefully this isn't a silly question.

On my 987.2 Cayman there is a clicking noise coming from behind the air vents on the dash. Are these normal. Sometimes they are just on start and sometimes a little longer. Is this something to be concerned about.

Many thanks
Simon

Hi Simon,

I have a 987.2 CS and that’s not something I recognise. Does the clicking increase in frequency if you increase the fan speed? If so It’s possible that the sound is coming from the fan itself … maybe something is fouling it? If you remove the under-bonnet cabin filter you should be able to reach-in to give the fan a spin to check that it’s spinning freely.

I think it is the fan. I've got a video of the noise and uploaded here as it's too big to attach. It doesn't happen all the time, more when its stopped or cold. It does sound right behind the dash.

I have a 987.2 as well. That noise is not familiar and the timing of the clicks seems too slow for it to be the fan. Does the timing change if you change the fan speed?

I did experience an intermittent clicking/tinkling noise from behind the dash that I attributed to the fan, possibly something stuck in the fan, but it did not correspond to fan speed. Before I got round to investigating further (was easy to ignore with the radio on), the A/C stopped blowing COLD. Took the car to a local garage for an A/C recharge and the noise disappeared. Unfortunately, the recharge did not last long (about a week) and I ended up replacing both condensers and the suction line (larger diameter tube running down the right side of the car). The line was leaking where it curls round the front jacking point. Replacing that line was not a trivial undertaking. The noise has stayed away.

My 987.2 Boxster does not to that, and no production would do that normally.
It sounds to me like a switch making/breaking, almost a slow indicator relay working as it is very regular.

Check the indicator on/off with the clicking?

Been out in it today, it sometimes stops if I change the fans and turn on AC. It doesn't change speed and seems to stop when I'm driving most the time, most prevalent when I'm stopped and idling. I haven't managed to check the cabin filter yet. Saw online it maybe be a recirculation fan that's failing to stop as it goes round and clicking.
