Clearing the front intakes

As the weather was nice, and I had sometime on my hands I decided to clean the car yesterday.
Does anyone else suffer from an accumulation of debris in the front intakes?
These are the ones with the fog lamp mounts, behind which are the radiators for the aircon system.
Mine were filled with gravel and leaves mostly.

I spent ages trying to scoop them out, gave up and got the Dyson. This sucked up most of the litter but not all of it.

Anyone else suffer, and is there an easy way to do this that I missed??
