Cleaning Injectors

Read somewhere that this maybe a worthwhile job, but is it a DIY possibility has anyone had any experience, etc
 
I looked into this about six months ago - I found a guy called Allen Wells http://www.injector-clean.co.uk/ who quoted me £15 per injector, 24hr turnaround with full report, new caps and seals. All you have to do is remove and refit them - not sure how easy that is on a 911....
 
You need to get them ultrasonically cleaned for it to be worthwhile. Not a home job. The good guys will check the spray pattern and also measure the rate to ensure you have a properly functioning matched set.. I needed to replace one just a couple of months ago - only 75,000 miles on it.
 
I have had mine done. I was chasing idle, tickover problems and eventually took it to Steve Bull, and he diagnosed an injector problem. With the engine running he disconnected each one and revved etc, and it seemed that two were discernably not working properly at certain lower rev levels . (Easier for a trained ear.) He diagnosed a possible spray pattern problem and so he sent them all away for cleaning and analysis.
Cost about £100 for that part of the job.
Result, None were diabolical but two were below par.
The car certainly runs smoother now.
He recommended sticking with Optimax and the occassional blast cleaning of additive.

 
How much work to remove and re-fit?

I guess I'm thinking whether this is one of those 'winter projects' it's worth performing. I've no specific problems but the car is 17 years old.
 
JZM cleaned mine for about £200 which included removing and refitting (may have gone up now) and they were able to tell me the spray patterns of each of the injectos - I think one was relatively poor - the others being OK.

The car felt sharper afterwards although this could have been a placebo effect I suppose.
 
Its 'easy' to remove and refit them. Conceptually anyway :)

As far as I remember from when I did it you remove the fuel rails from the injectors and then yank each injector out of the head. They are a push fit and due to the access restrictions and the tightness of the fit this caused much swearing and several bruised knuckles/fingers.

So its easy but can be a bit of a pain. As usual if I can do it anyone can and I think the total cost to have them cleaned was about 60 quid from a Bosch service center with the appropriate cleaning machine.

Did my injectors about two years ago it only takes about 1/2hr a side to get them out then I sent them to www.teessideautotech.co.uk to have them cleaned, charged me £12 per injector
