Classic Le Mans 2004

Hello

All, does anyone fancy going to the classic Le Mans next year. The dates are 23-25 July, so the weather should be good, no reason not to get the 12 out!

I haven't heard of a club organised trip, so I don't mind doing some of the leg work for the 912 boys & girls + any other like minded people.

I went to Le Mans last year in the 12 and the drive over (Le Havre to Le Mans about 400 miles return) was great staying on the smaller roads.

It would be cool to get a good group together, maybe have a BBQ + a few beers (mark, gav[8D]).

I went last year, and camped by the Dunlop bridge . . . bit cold so July is much better. I'd definately be up for a group trip down.

This is as far as I have got with looking at anything at the mo.

Not to much info on the site I may have to pick up the phone.

If we need to Continental Car Tours do Le Mans trips and are doing the Classic next year. Basically they organise Ferry, Tickets and camping. As the ferry will be high season its a bit more expensive than Le Mans usually is.

They guess at this early stage £140-£200 per person (two in a car)

We have used them for our Ypres run and they make everything very straightforward and cheap.

What does everyone think?

Ill be up for a trip to Le mans never managed to get their yet good excuss to run the car not that i need any...

1967 Burgundy 912 (I hope not by then)

Prices sound good gav, last time I went it cost me £350, do they say which ferries?

I went from Portsmouth to Le Harve, which cut down on the driving.

Looking forward to it already.[:D]

I normally go Portsmouth to Cean . . on the overnighter . . . . a big selling point for me is the poor double act in the bar (piano and singer) . . . cheesy, but fitting.

Cuts down to the motorway miles which, lets face, it can be a little boring.

Sure 'continental tours' would be flexible on ferry, if that's the route we want to go down. The alternative is for someone to set out an itinerary detailing which ferry which campsite and how to obtain tickets etc. . . then it's down to the individual to book things up.

The ferries (Dover/Calais anyway) can be had quite cheap if they are prebooked at the start of the year. You can move them around as much as you like (I moved one of my bookings three times), and, having prebooked them, it forces me to go 'en continent' each year (some hardship - Alsace/Black Forest last year).

I am up for this trip

I rode down to Le Mans for the 24 hours on my bike this year. The best roads are from Dieppe down, which is 200 miles from Le Mans. This realistically means a whole day's drive especially if travelling in convoy.

Cherbourg - Le Mans is about 170 miles

We also need to remember that this is the French holiday period, so expect loads of traffic and stupid drivers.

Anothe BBS mentions that going down as part of a PCGB trip meant special access to private ares on showing a special Porche badge, so maybe this need investigating as well.

"I went last year and Im definitely up for it next year. But I know we are not great fans of PCGB, however we booked through them last year and they gave us Porsche arm bands, which allowed you into everywhere. Standing on the pit wall at 2am listening to V12 ferraris was great! Nowhere was out of bounds. Whereas the poor French people were turned away!!!"

Yup, the French Porsche Club organised the various Porsche Club attendance last year.

Well worth arranging through them. However, so far nothing seems to have been said about arrangements for next year.

Travel etc, is of course up to the individual.
