Cayman S Sport- which motor query

new member Andy here……haven’t bought my first Porsche yet but settled on a 987 gen 2 for my first car. Have searched far and wide but could someone tell me which motor the 2009 S Sport comes with? Articles describe the Sport as a runout model and HP listed as 303 which sounds like the older IMS motor spec’d up. But as a 2009 it should be a gen 2 with the MA1 motor. Anyone got the truth? Cheers for any help.

Hi Andrew,

I think you’ll find that the 2009 CS Sport was a 987.1 run-out car and therefore not Gen2 with the MA1 DFI engine. Quite rare though and often sought-after because of that.

2009 was the change-over year and I myself have an early 987.2 CS registered in September.

Thanks Jeff……my understanding is the later 987.1 engines were improved w/respect the IMS issues but there’s still lingering doubt by some. Does that ring true to you and other members?

The later Gen1 engines were fitted with an updated - and supposedly more robust - IMS bearing arrangement. I think that bore-scoring probably is more of an issue, although both probably have been overinflated by internet chatter and were addressed in the Gen2 engines, both the 2.9L [IDI] and 3.4L [DFI].

Thanks Paul, saw that link. The exclusivity and options of the Sport really appeals, but I think a gen 2 motor would give a lot more peace of mind. The R is a great attraction but paying twice the price for a barely optioned gen 2 car ( minus 50 kilos )just because of the rarity doesn’t make sense to me. Seems a 09 to 12 CS is in my future.
