My C4S was at Mid-Sussex Porsche recently for some warranty work and I was loaned a Cayman R for the period, and so I thought I'd share some thoughts...
I approached the car with an open mind and was looking forward to driving it for a day. I drove around 150 miles on day 1, but due to various things that I needed to do, the bulk of the journey was on M-ways and then in stop-start city traffic. Neither conditions best suited for the 'R'.
Immediate thoughts:
- The white car with black decals looked great
- Bucket seats were really comfortable and extremely supportive.
- Engine lacked low down torque
- Engine didn't like small throttle inputs (on part throttle / low revs the engine seemed to struggle a bit)
- On a constant throttle cruising, I felt the engine was a bit 'buzzy'
- Accelerating through the rev range the engine sounded wonderful
Note the car had just 1,000 miles on the clock, so clearly had only just been run in and was still quite tight.
Later in the day I got a chance to stretch the car a bit more and the true character started to come through.
The following day I had the chance to drive the car 40 or so miles 'cross country' to return it to the dealership. I was really able to exploit the car (well, as far as my ability and sensible behaviour on public roads would permit), and had an exhilerating drive. In Sport mode with the sports exhaust on, the car really came alive and was tremendous fun to drive.
I arrived at the dealership at 8am, to find it didn't actually open until 9am, meaning I could go for another hour's drive!!
On the way home I was surprised at how good my own C4S felt to drive, but it was clearly less agile than the 'R'!!!
I'm not sure I could live with the 'R' on a daily basis (or at least it would definitely have some shortcomings compared to my 911), but as a weekend car it would be tremendous!
Thanks to Jeremy at Mid-Sussex for sorting out the car and the warranty work seemlessly, as usual.
