Cayman 981 GTS Static Noise Test Level?

Good evening all.

I'm looking around at the track days on offer, and realised I don't actually know the claimed db level of the GTS for the static noise test.

Google searching is a bit inconclusive....

So my request is for someone who has actually done track days in their 981 GTS to please share their findings?

One would assume that a 101db static limit would be fine, however I don't know how much margin there is if there are some exhaust pops/crackles?

Any factual info would me much appreciated,

Thanks,
Martin

I have a 718 4.0 with an X-pipe exhaust so louder than regular. At track days they ask for about 4k rpm with a 105dB limit at most tracks and my X-pipe measures at 94dB, the standard exhaust struggles to get to 90dB. They dont measure pops or crackles, you just sit there at the RPM they ask for and they have a stick that gives the distance from the pipe, about 1m I think. If you are on the stock exhaust you will be nowhere near any track day noise limits. When you get there and a 991 GT3RS goes past on full beans you will realise just how noisy you can be and still pass.

Thanks for the response.

I am familiar with the procedure, just not in a Porsche.

I was always surprised at how loud a car can register on the db scale!

Planning on trying Bedford in the GTS and I know from previous events they are quite strict on noise there!

Cheers

No problem, some years teaching students taught me never to assume knowledge so wasn't being disrespectful. I've never done Bedford, its South of a line I try not to cross unless I have to and then mostly by train! I would be stunned if its below 95 though.

Haha oh no offense taken, I'm glad to see a response!

Bedford is 101 static but 87.5 drive by. Drive by, although extremely low isn't really an issue as you can short shift past the MICs or take a wide birth. Is only the 101 static I was unsure of. I've read a lot that GT4s are 101 and up on the static.

I'm going to head over to Brands this weekend or next to get a test done for peace of mind.

Having not done any track days in a Porsche, I've obviously never sat an revved to 3/4, so I literally have no idea how loud they are.

I will report back in here once I have firm evidence!

Cheers

Hi Martin,

Most likely you’ve already seen it but according to the Bedford Autodrome site:

The static noise limit at Bedford Autodrome is 101dB(A) and the drive-by limit is 87.5dB(A). On a Bedford Autodrome track day, all vehicles must pass the static noise limit to be permitted on the track. The drive-by limit is measured at a distance of approx 20m whilst vehicles are on track.

If you don’t have a modified exhaust I’m sure that your GTS will be fine for both the static test [constant revs, so no pops and crackles] and the drive-by, although you may need to be more careful with the drive-by if you have PSE, but if necessary you can always back-off the throttle as you come to the microphone site.

Y I think the 981s in standard are noisier than the 718s because they dont have the dreaded GPF. When they fit an x-pipe the 981 GT4s need a track tip to get below the 105 but in standard they seem to pass easily. 101 static is quite loud though. That said I think the approach of going to get it tested is a good one. When I had my x-pipe fitted I looked for a javelin day at croft, 10 miles from me, and even though I wasn't driving the tester very kindly agreed to do mine for security. I didn't fancy track tips but didn't want to rock up at a track day only to be kicked out and lose my fees. I dont think the 911 GT3s would pass an 87.5 drive by but I may be wrong, they are noticeably louder than everything else on the POCGB days in my opinion, as a 67 year old increasingly hard of hearing old fart according to my daughter.

Thanks Jeff, yes I am pretty sure it will be fine as you say. I just never like the unknown, and when it takes so much effort to book and find time to get to an event, the thought of being turned away at the first hurdle is not good!

5500 rpm ish noise test result confirmation:

981 GTS - PSE off - 96db
981 GTS - PSE on - 98db

981 GT4 - PSE off - 98db
981 GT4 - PSE on - 104db

I note that these numbers are just what we had recorded at Brands Hatch, and are not definitive numbers for the car as a whole. Engine temperature and weather conditions can affect your results.
