Cayenne Buying Advice

Hi all,

I'm thinking about spending up to £10k on a Cayenne. There seems to be a reasonable number of decent looking cars available at this price but was hoping to get some advice on things to look out for in terms of options to have and known issues to be wary of.

From my initial research it seems I can get a seemingly nice 4.5l Cayenne S (2003/2004) for this budget although I've even seen the odd Turbo creeping in just above the budget. I'm generally suspicious when a higher spec car than I was expecting appears in the searches but would welcome any thoughts on this. I'm not too concerned about fuel efficiency as only do a relatively limited mileage so if this is pushing the price of the higher performance cars down, this may work to my advantage.

if it helps I was in your position about a year ago although looking to spend up to £13.5k was also looking at an 4.5s. I ended up buying a low mileage 2003 Turbo under 40k miles for £11k in a private sale. It did need about £1500 spending on it to bring up to date, however that was factored into the price from my perspective. I have to say it was the best decision I made to get the turbo, it is quicker than the 993 that it replaced and is so comfortable and practical too. Once you get over the marmite looks that is.

My advice other than the coolant pipes and propshaft issues is to get an inspection done. I always prefer using Porsche Indys rather than RAC / AA as I maybe incorrectly hope they know the Porsches better. For around £200 it can save you a huge mistake and if nothing else provides peace of mind and a bargaining tool. All depends on the quality of the warranty you may get from a main dealer whether you would do this for a trade buy I guess.

Also coil packs, with WHS above still looking for one myself around the same price in black.
 
Check the battery too, they last about 4 years and cost circa £400 for a new one. Also check the passanger seat electrics, the wires get caught and fail.

£400 for a new battery, why so expensive? You can get a Bosch silver s5 for less than £120 which come with a 5 year warranty.
 
I don't doubt that a battery can be cheaper. From memory that was the PMD fitted price for the higher of the two spec batteries they offer.
To change the main battery the passenger seat has to come out so it takes a while. You also need to be sure that once the new battery is installed the systems come back up. I was advised that often they don't, so you might need diagnostic kit to get the car running.

Give my son Stuart a call on 07714 628695 he still has his Cayenne S for sale.
The car is silver, has had 4 new tyres, 8 new coil packs and propshaft done last year. Just had a major service at PCT Coventry.
Car has done around 119000 miles, but is in good condition for year (2004), has all the electronic extras and a space saver spare wheel.
He is looking for around £7000.

It's a lot of car for the money.

interesting, I have just paid £220 for a new battery including fitting. My battery was completely dead so I couldnt move the passenger seat back to get at the bolts to undo and lift the seat and do it myself. Guess thats the difference between a local indy and PMD. Anyway apologies for hijacking the thread good luck with the purchase
