Cayenne buyer advice

Guys,

I am looking to move from my current 996 to a Cayenne and just need a couple of pointers as trying to find relevant information on the web is proving a little difficult.

I have found a 4.5 Tip that looks to fit the bill quite nicely, it is 2004 with quite high mileage - but well looked after.
Looking through its history, it has had a window regulator, air pump, rear air bag, discs, pads, coils and regular servicing recently all at the dealers - so no expense has been spared.

My issues are:

At stand still with the engine running, if you try to raise the vehicle, nothing happens - dos this need to be moving (thinking about it, the driver door was open as well).
Do these things come with a spare wheel as standard - there is a can of sealant in the boot and marks as though a spare should be there.
Also, I understand these have an airline to pump up a tyre - I guess if this isn't under the front seat, it is missing
Is there a way of polishing the brightware at the bottom of the windows and on the rear pillar as this is very dull

Are there any common issue to look out for - spent the last 4 years sorting out 996 so don't really want to go through this again when I can get the garage to sort them out for nothing.

Couple of things here; some of the replacement items I haven't come across myself, air bag, air pump and window regulator, but discs, pads and coils are 'consumables'[;)]

The drivers door has to be closed before you can activate the change in suspension height.

Spare wheel is not a standard fitment and the sealant is pretty useless. Does it have a Bose bass box in the boot? That's where the spare sits on the early cars. The compressor should be there as well.
Any competent detailer will have a box of tricks that will clean up the brightware if normal polishes fail. The plastic panel below the rear window also benefits from a freshen up with a DA polisher.

Electrics are a point to check thoroughly as they can be an achilles heel of the car. I have had an 04 and 07 with virtually no issues other than the rear number plate light that had rusted due to leaking rear washer pipes. Others have had niggles but as is often said it's a complicated car.

Check the rear window switch (the one under the rear wiper) has been updated. The rear window had a habit of opening unexpectedly[8|]

A good service history is important IMO, my cars had both done in excess of 80k miles with no significant mechanical issues but were serviced on schedule by the dealer with warranty checks each year.

Get a good one and there's a lot of car for your money, the V8 is a great engine. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, it has helped me quite a lot.
One thing you mentioned and I had forgotten was the electrics.

The switch on the drivers door didn't appear to open anything - does this unlock the boot glass or the main boot lid?

There isnt a Bose system fitted but there looks to be some marks similar to what a spare would leave behind.
I read somewhere that there is an air line to blow up tyres rather than a compressor - isnt this the case?

There isnt a compressor in the boot, but i can keep the one i had to buy form my 996.

The no plate light has been replaced recently and the other one looks dodgy - maybe a similar issue as you mention - this may explain a small amount of condensation in the boot as well.

Can you recommend an insurance company who may be sympathetic with quotes.
For the last 10 years i have managed to get previous cars on classic or modern classic policy with limited mileage as always a second car (as this one will be) however, my current company wil only cover this until renewal date.
My normal no-claims has lapsed due to not having a 'proper policy'

There's only a switch for the rear window opener under the rear wiper, no remote inside. Tailgate lift wasn't available on the early cars. Maybe the switch in the drivers door you refer to is for the child lock disable. I can't remember TBH.
See if you can get the original invoice with options to check the spare wheel situation.
Direct Line used to be sympathetic to those without NCB but a clean record. Give them a try as well.

Oh and have a look at Tiskev's car - it's a good 'un.
 
Hi Dave, I have a 2004 3.2 and the hose for the tyre inflation is beneath the pasenger side rear seat in a strap. The button in the door unlocks the rear door depending on how you have configured the settings in the 'door lock' section of the drivers display. I have a 50 mph inflatable tyre in the boot, which as has been mentioned can be renoved to fit Bose eqpt.
I have found the car to be exceptional and I would encourage you to look for a good one. Pay attention to the 'kick down ' in 3rd and 4th since there can be hidden problems.

Hi Dave,

I've had my 55 reg 4.5S for just over 2 months now, and it's an absolute joy to drive. Definitely look out for a well pampered one and I'm sure it will repay you in style. Sounds a bit of a mystery about the spare tyre situation on yours, so best to check out with previous owner. I used the airline last night for the first time (heading for autoroute early tomorrow) and was very impressed with the way it worked....no longer need to spend that 20p down at Tesco's[:D][:D].
Apart from the plastic mainifold problem (changed to aluminium in later models) and core plugs, should be ok, but as Peter has advised, it is a complex beast and only cheap for one reason! But as I said, what a drive.....even with bookcase, TV, lamps and various other detritus from decamping daughter from Uni digs in the back[:)]

All the replies have been very helpful and I think I have the insurance sorted now - staying with current one until Feb then Aviva look to be the most competitive after that.

Will post nice pic when it is home.

One final thing - silly, i know - This is fitted with DVD monitors in the rear of the front headrests and the main parts under the seat - would this be something that could be speced from Porsche or is it more likely to be an aftermarket kit. It looks a professional fitted kit, but I will be removing it at the first chance - keep a look out on ebay if anyone is interested

The DVD monitors etc. are definitely aftermarket as this option was not offered by Porsche...
