Asda are selling Castrol gtx 4 lt for £12 at the mo.They have mineral, semi and fully synthetic.

Cheers for the heads-up. I've often bought my Castrol from Asda, they seem to have it on offer quite frequently!

Yeah they do.They must have a contact at Castrol. But £12 for 4lts is a great price cause Halfrauds want around £20 for it.

Beware that 4L of oil is not enough for the oil change on an average size engine, Porsche flat 6s take 8L for example.
Oil always used to be sold in 5 litre cans this seems to be a way to make you think its cheap, whereas more expensive as you will need to buy 2 x 4L cans and then may have up to 3.5 litres over as spare.

I'm not that bothered about the size of the can to be honest. I will use what is left at a latter date. 2 x 4lt of oil gives plenty to do an oil change and leave you with enough spare to keep topping it up until you go for the next change.
I'm not sure about which oil to use on a Turbo ,but I use semi synthetic in my S2 as I feel that full is just too thin for my engine. Also the Factory states that the engine can use 1lt per 1500 miles so changing my oil as I do every 5-6 thousand miles means that I could potentially use 4 lts in the interim period.

Martin I would use a good quality synthetic for your turbo, synthetics are more suited to engines that run hot as they are much less likely to shear down overtime. One with the ACEA A3/B4 rating should be fine. What grade or viscosity will depend on your usage and whether the car is used over winter, although a good 10W50 maybe a good compromise as it can be used over winter and will handle the odd track day too.

FWIW Synthetics are not thinner than mineral oils, a 10W40 mineral will have the same viscosity as a 10W40 full syth, you can also get synthetic oils in thick 20W50 and 10W60 grades just as you can mineral based oils.

I think the confusion comes where fully synthetic oils are more suitable to wider multi-grades, such as 5w50, 0W40 which are not possible with mineral oils, but it doesn't mean you have to use these grades to benefit from the advantages from using synthetic oil.

I agree: 'too thin' came about due to synthetic being available in Winter grades that couldnt be achieved with mineral oil.

Ive been guilty of saying it myself, although it was correct in context because the synthetic in question were 0W & 5W.

Im not sure about S2s, but I believe that all 968s left the factory with 5W- synthetic oil. Its a shame that many of these later engines (2.7l, 3.0l & 3.0l 968) didnt endure well enough to still suit the grade now. Conversely, my 1985 series one 944 ran for ever on ProS 5W and, whilst it showed slightly lower oil pressure as a result (hot and cold), it never used a drop!
