Car off the road questions/advice

MOT expires in about a month. I know I have work to do, including some bodywork and I'm not sure I have the time to do it properly before the MOT.

I was thinking of letting the MOT expire, putting on SORN and then I have as much time as I need to get all the jobs sorted. Just wondering (as many of you have done this in the past) whether there are any gotchas in doing this as there are all sorts of dependencies between tax/MOT and insurance.

Part of me feels bad leaving the car without an MOT, since it's had one continuously for 21 years, and I worry somehow the jobs will spiral and it'll never get back on the road again. I can't help thinking I'd be better off to bodge a quick patch on the sill and get another years ticket, plenty of time to sort it properly. Advice?

A friend of mine in Colchester repaired both my sills recently. I supplied a repair panel from Elliott (very good) and he did the rest. He charged me £280 in total, which I understand to be very cheap. I asked him to stone-chip the sills instead of spraying them, as I intend to do a full respray this year, so that kept the cost down too. I can put you in touch if you like, although he would do that in his own time so it wouldn't exactly be an immediate job, it would be when he could find time for you.

£280 is indeed very cheap! Should have said I intend to DIY the work myself as I have the kit and am in the process of learning the skills. Of course it doesn't stack up economically but I enjoy the challenge and the satisfaction of doing the work to my standard and knowing it's sorted for good.

I'd love to get the kit and learn how to do it, might one day.

Very pleased with my £280 bill. Even more pleased with my £180 bill from his auto-electrician friend, as he didn't quite finish the job then disappeared before I paid him. I'm toying with the idea of getting my mate to do the respray though. He'll take it back to metal, repair any dings/rust, remove as much trim as possible, then take it to his day job and have a proper hot oven respray. Estimate at the moment is £1500-2000, which I think is a fairly decent price.
