camshaft knocking

944 was fine until today, started up and now has top end knock belt new 2 years ago does it just need tensioning?

Belts should be re tensioned at 1500 miles . so probably not that. Could be stuck tappet - flush and oil change.

I'd go with stuck tappet too, if it is it should clear after 5-10 minutes. Never known a Camshaft knock on these cars. One other possibility is a broken spark plug, this can happen when a piece of ceramic insulation breaks off and then gets smashed between piston and head, I know because I've been there, this was the morning of the dyno run results in my signature. Didn't find out until some time later about the bad plug, still it explained the hesitation at full load and why the dyno guy only did one run. With good plugs I'm confident the car would have hit 380bhp at 19 psi....:) anyway as a word of warning I was running Iridium plugs which have a tendency for this failure, some Dyno's insist on removing such plugs before doing a power run. Back on topic unless you are using Iridium plugs I'm pretty sure your problem is a stuck tappet as previously stated.

Check to make sure the Torx bolt holding the camshaft sprocket is tight. They can occasionally loosen of and knock. Make sure it is tight (46ft lbs) as it can break the woodruff key if left slack.

Thanks, that sounds encouraging. I bought the car for my wife who used to have the 924. She always wanted another as she had to stop driving the 924 because of a knee injury which made a manual car unusable. This 944 has a full history, all mots from day one and bills for absolutely thousands. Just about everything that moves has been replaced within the last 6 years... see, I didn't just jump in and buy the first one I could afford!
The stuck tappet sound more feasible because after the 200 miles home it has sat outside for 2 weeks, being started only once or twice because the day after i got it, it wouldn't start, no spark etc. I checked DME relay and disconnected the main fuel line which pumped petrol into a jar with gusto. I then removed, tapped and put back the ignition relay and hey presto it started.
So, do I just start it up and let it idle for a while/until the knock goes away?

Yes,if it does not clear after say 15 mins get yourself down to a motor factors and get some top end valve train flushing additive, it does work.

My money is on the tappets - the cars sound awful after being sat for a few weeks..

Yes but personally I'd do a few checks first, crank the engine over by hand, all should be quite ie no knock. If you do hear anything set crank to TDC and check timing marks. There's a viewing hole in the top of the bell housing on the passengers side for the crank, cam pulley mark is at front just to the right of the distributor cap views through a small hole which should be plugged with a small grommet but not always. If these marks line up then I'd feel safe in turning the car over, I still believe your problem is a stuck tappet but it's always best to check first.

Mine knocks too,MOT tomorrow then sort it out,its quite noisy on idle.
Apparently the tappets were changed by the last owner, but as i know him as a lying b`stard i doubt it was done or at least not properly.

Yes it was the tappets I left it ticking over and waited....10 mins came and went.....15 ditto...at 22 mins the pitch changed to a 'lighter' note then magically, at 25 mins, it went away! Thanks to everyone for your help. Now the tailgate release has stopped working this evening but I can sort that out.
BTW has anyone had those stone shield/guard transparent sticky plastic things fitted? Mine had them on all wheel arches and one panel each side between the rear arch and the B post. Looking through the invoices I see they were fitted in 2007.
All of them had multiple rust spots behind them and looked shabby so I removed them yesterday and needles to say some of the paint came off too. [car was resprayed in 2006 at huge cost ] Around the rear arches they seem to have encouraged more rust than if they'd never been fitted!

They came as standard from the factory and do a good job of protecting those areas from stone chips. Alas they can't safeguard against a poor repair underneath [&o]
