Cam/balance belt squeal

Recently had the cam and balance belts done off a specialist but the engine now has a squealing noise like the belts are too tight.
I rang them back and had a good chat about it but was told that this is nornal when new belts are tensioned correctly and the noise will slowly quiten as the belts settle in and stretch.
Its just when I bought the car it didnt make any noise like this and takes getting used to, but then again the belts could have been too slack in the fisrt place.
Anyone had the same when they had their belts done?

If they are over-tightened, you run the risk of one of the tensioner/roller bearings failing, which will probably result in lots of very bent valves. I made the mistake of ignoring exactly what you described and ended up with a sheared timing belt tensioner and 4 bent exhaust valves.... a sight more costly than taking it to someone who knows 944's and has tensioned enough 944 belts to know what's right. Don't risk it !

Belts should be quiet, they do make a slight noise of the teeth of the belts on the toothed wheels but not a squeal. There is a correct tension measurement for the timing and balance belts. Any specialist will know this and should have the tool.

Seems to be tight on the tensioners or as the ancilliary belts will have been removed to the alternator and power steering they could be tight. These are set by traditional methods.

I said all this to the man, think he seemed a bit put out that I was questioning him. He said it was done with the correct tools and thats how it should be. He said I could go back and he would untension it slightly to make it quiet but its on my head should it fail because its too slack.
Dont know what to do to be honset
My description of the squeal might be a bit exaggerated I suppose, its more of a high pitched whine, but ultimately the same problem.

Mine squealed a bit after rpm did them a few years ago, still squealed after they re-tensioned at 1000 miles. However no squeal now some 25,000 miles later.

Just had mine done for the 3rd time since owning the car, they have never made any noise before or after replacement.
It maybe as said above, one of the ancillery belts, I would check those first.

Out of interest has the "Specalist" told you to have the belts checked - re-tensioned after 2000 miles?

Have just checked the alternator and steering belt and they are fine, I was told to have the belt retensioned between 1000 and 1200 miles. Is this not needed to be done?

What model year car do you have? On 1987 and newer cam belt goes more or less accurate tension automatically. Most likely your balance saft belt is way too tight. These belts does not make any sound when they are new. I would change "specialist". Also fix too tight belt(s) as soon as possible.

Its a 1989 2.7 lux model, Im going to ring him up tomorrow and ask him to take some tension off it cos its doing me head in to be honest.

As Oli says, they shouldn't squeak at all. You get the occasional squeak when they first start up for a minute or so but never after that. Also worth replacing the balance shaft sprockets as well if your engine is high miles as these can wear quite a bit. Not very expensive and ECP usually carries them in stock.
