My honest opinion is that if you have fumes in the cabin the root cause is an exhaust leak somewhere underneath the car.
Occasionally I dont close the rear hatch properly, and in the rear view mirror I can see daylight between body and seal. I usually dont notice until I start driving and realise road noise is louder than usual. I've driven my 15 mile commute this way (slightly open hatch) numerous times, with and without the front windows/sunroof open. I never get any exhaust smell inside the car, even when not moving!
I also had my center console, gear gaiter and rubber seal out for a little while and never got fumes from the tunnel either.
So i think you need to be looking for an exhaust leak.
The other possibilty, like I mentioned before is a cracked/leaking manifold. Fumes escaping under the bonnet and being drawn in by the fans.
